How to Prepare Identify the main features of an emergency action plan for an athletic team Identify the members of the emergency medical services team and their role in helping an injured athlete Be prepared for any situation The Plan should include detailed information on the basic principles of: ◦ Game and practice coverage ◦ Procedure Steps ◦ Communication systems ◦ Equipment ◦ Emergency Care Facilities 1. Sports with a high potential for serious injury should have medical coverage during practices and games 2. Necessary emergency equipment also needs to be on hand 3. Emergency action plans should be formulated each year before the season begins 4. Needs to be developed for every venue 5. All members of the response team should be aware of their responsibilities and practice in mock situations regularly – consider differences between on ice and on field for example. Charge Person Call person Control Person Possible equipment available for those properly trained: Spinal Board Cervical Collar Stretcher Supplemental Oxygen AED Nearest medical facility ◦ Address ◦ Directions ◦ Phone number Keep your information in a logical order Do you think you should include maps? Condensed version of your EAP Contains all information required in an emergency Anticipate the worst and whatever happens will be manageable The Ambulance Personnel Once they arrive, the athlete’s care is transferred to them Charge Person relays: Initial status of the athlete What has been done for them up to this point Any pertinent status information (ie. vital signs, etc.) The charge person’s report to EMS must be: ◦ CONCISE ◦ CLEAR ◦ FAST EMS will decide where the athlete will be transported based on their condition Athlete’s who do not require an ambulance: Injury does not threaten life or limb Athlete’s vital signs are stable A parent or other authorized person is available to transport (this cannot be you) Athletic Therapist will be in attendance at all possible practices and games Duties include: ◦ Pre-event preparation (athlete taping & stretching, field inspection, etc.) ◦ Athlete injury response during the event ◦ Post-event athlete care As the Charge person you: Are the first medically trained individual to arrive at the scene of an injury Have successfully completed Standard First Aid and BLS as a minimum standard Have a duty to provide the specific care that you have been trained to provide Paramedic/Ambulance Crew are: The most experienced responders in the field Take over from the First Responder Transport the athlete for appropriate advanced medical attention
