Technology as a Way of Revealing Generation Gap attributed mainly to the changes brought about by technology those who belong to the older generation think that technologies are too complicated to operate Serves as a challenge for those who are working in the field of S & T to make technological advancements more accessible and less confusing for people who are not young anymore It is also a challenge for the younger generation to take the older generation to an exciting journey in S & T The Human Condition before Common Era o Homo erectus have been using fire to cook, through chipping one flint over the other to produce a spark o Homo sapiens began to sharpen stones as knives o people discovered minerals and began forging metalworks o Discovered the use of fur clothing and animal skin as protection against harsh winds o Have deeply engaged in the concept of beauty o excavations on the latter part of stone age include several figures thought to be ceremonial , meaning that perhaps people of the time had painstakingly wrought and hewed said figures in honor of some deity o Primitive Gods include objects they encounter through their day to day lives Different tribes may have different Gods ▪ Those who might have lived alongside majestic creatures such as elephants worship them as the owner of the land ▪ In windy mountains, they might have had a mountain god to explain wind currents and ask for provisions ▪ Those who lived near coastal areas or bodies of water might have had water gods they referred to when asking for a good catch ▪ Other tribes may have shared several generic Gods such as the sun The Human Condition in the Common Era ✔ For a long time , humans were content with their relationship with nature ✔ Earliest case of man-made extinction occurred 12,000 years ago, possibly brought about by hunting and territorial disputes Holocene extinction – Sixth or Anthropocene extinction - occurred from as early as 100,000 to 200 years up - extinction of flora and fauna due to human activity Factors that contributed to the extinction of natural resources growing population intensive hunting conversion of forests for agricultural purposes formation of communities paving way for civilization ▪ Even as a community, the people realized that though they were self sufficient, they were in constant need of resources ▪ Before, wars were the early solution for tribes competing for resources ▪ But they realized that they could engage into peaceful negotiations by offering products or resources which are not present in the towns of their competing tribe ▪ it is in this process that trade emerged leading to cross town and eventually cross cultural interaction ▪ people turned wealth as their main objective for they perceived that those who have plenty, live comfortably and happier ▪ Farming , hunting and producing things were intensified ▪ Products of every kind were exchanged ( Crops, cattle, poultry, clothing materials, metals, accessories, weapons, spices, literature , and entertainment ▪ Humanity became more complex Technology ❖ instrumental in bringing the good life because people were able to come up with creations that would make life easier, more comfortable and enriching Humans today live a better life compared to those who lived several years ago 1. Mortality rate ❑ lesser women and children die during birth ❑ improved medical care for premature infants ❑ improved maternal care for mothers 2. Average lifespan ❑ enhanced living status ❑Discovery of remedies to cure diseases ❑ easier and faster distribution of medicines 3. Literacy rate ❑ accessed to education 4. Gross Domestic Product ❑ determines the value of the country’s goods and services produced within the territory given a certain period of time ❑ higher country income is brought about by high productivity , often an indicator of presence of technology The Essence of Technology Humans are reliant to technology in search for the good life Technology is instrumental in achieving a goal in mind in order to reach some greater goods Martin Heidegger a philosopher who argued that the essence, purpose and being are different from each other technology can either be considered as a means to achieve man’s end, or it constitutes human activity
