If you cannot make it at any of these times, message me to set up a time that works for us both. These appointments can be in-person or remote. **CLASS TIMES AND LOCATION:** Monday and Wednesday, 9:55 am -- 10:45 am in MSB 108 **COURSE INFORMATION** ====================== **PURPOSE OF THE COURSE: This course is the first in a two-part sequence and provides a pathway for successful completion of Math 10041 Introductory Statistics next semester. This course *together with MATH 10041* will satisfy the Kent Core requirement. Kent Core courses as a whole are intended to broaden intellectual perspectives, foster ethical and humanitarian value, and prepare students for responsible citizenship and productive careers.** **COURSE PREREQUISITE: You are expected to have successfully completed (with a grade of C or better) MATH 00021 here at Kent, or have an overall high school GPA of 3.0 or higher or an appropriate placement score on the university mathematics placement exam.** **COURSE GOALS:** 1. Develop a foundation of statistical reasoning through an intuitive introduction of statistical concepts. 2. Become fluent in the basic algebra skills needed to succeed in Introductory Statistics. 3. Develop effective study and mindset strategies to succeed in future mathematics courses. 4. Develop effective problem-solving and reading mathematics skills. **CANVAS website:** This course is housed in Canvas, which you can enter via [FlashLine](https://flashline.kent.edu/) or [canvas.kent.edu](https://canvas.kent.edu/). I will post class materials, including announcements, course notes and other resources, assignments, and grades on this site, so please check this site often. Also, you will access your online learning materials and homework system through this site. **ACTIVE LEARNING: Most of us learn best by doing and by actively engaging with topics and other individuals. So, our c**lass time will be spent working on problems and activities either in a group or individually. In order to get the most out of class time and to be a contributing member of your group, you will be expected to watch short videos or study posted example problems on Canvas BEFORE coming to each class. I hope this course organization will help you to "learn by doing" and to develop a strong understanding of statistical reasoning. **TEXT**: ***Corequisite Support Modules for Statistics*** 1/e by the Pearson Corequisite Support Faculty Team These materials are **part of the University\'s *Flash* *Books* program, and you have already paid for electronic access to this text.** You will have access to the course materials via the "Access Pearson" link on our Canvas Course. Instructions on how to gain initial access through *Flash Books* to your course materials are on our Canvas course site. **Opting out of the *Flash* *Books* program is not wise since you would then need to purchase a separate MLM license which will cost you more than what you paid as part of the *Flash* *Books* program.** **SOFTWARE:** **ACTIVITY BOOK: You need to purchase the *Statistical Thinking Activity* book from the bookstore and bring it to class with you every day. You will work on activities from this activity book every day and these will be collected and graded.** **CALCULATOR:** You need a **[graphing calculator]** for class activities and homework assignments**.** I will be using a *TI-84 Plus* for in-class demonstrations and suggest you purchase one of these if you do not currently own a graphing calculator. Please bring the calculator to class ***every day.*** **ATTENDANCE POLICY**: I expect you to attend every class. More than two unexcused absences will result in a reduction of your course grade by one letter grade. Acceptable reasons for missing class include illness and injury (with documentation), disability related concerns, military service, death in the immediate family, religious observance , academic field trips, and participation in an improved concert or athletic event. Absences For these reasons are considered excused only with written documentation (). Please notify me in advance if you need to miss class. I do not allow make-ups on quizzes or classwork for unexcused absences. If, however, you do miss a class due to unforeseen circumstances, ***it is your responsibility to obtain notes from a group member and complete the daily group assignment on your own***. **Please try to be on time for all classes, but do not hesitate to join late, if necessary. Attendance is a key to your success, so I would rather have you join the class late (or leave early if you have an important commitment such as an advising or doctor's appointment that cannot be rescheduled) than not at all.** COURSE ACTIVITIES AND ASSESSMENTS ================================= There are many and varied opportunities for you to demonstrate and assess how you are doing in the class, so that you may reflect on ways you can improve and so that you can seek help if needed. My hope is that all students will develop the knowledge and confidence they need to be successful in this course and future statistics and mathematics courses. **MAKE-UP EXAMS:** Given only under extraordinary circumstances with written verification of a university-accepted excuse (documented illness, death in immediate family, university-sponsored event). Please notify me IN ADVANCE, if possible, if an exam is to be missed. **GRADES DETAILS** ================== **GRADING:** ***Grading Scale** (in percents)* ----------------------------------------------- ---------- ----------------------------------- ------------------------ -- -- Math Notebook (3 collections @ 25 pts each) **9%** 3 Unit Exams @ 100 pts. each **30%** Weekly Quizzes (8 -- 10; group or individual) **12%** Daily Group Assignments (\~ 20 @ 5 pts. each) **12%** MLM Homework Assignments **12%** Final Exam **25%** **Total Course Grade** **100%** There will be NO CURVE ***You need to earn a grade of C or higher in this course to be eligible to take MATH 10041 during Spring 2025 semester.*** **UNIVERSITY SYLLABUS CONTENT** =============================== **ACADEMIC SUPPORT STATEMENT: Kent State recognizes many students face challenges and we are committed to supporting your academic journey when you need help. However, the use of AI must adhere to the following guidelines. - Citing AI Use: If you use AI to assist in solving problems, you must clearly cite the AI tool used and provide a brief description of how it contributed to your work. This citation should be included in your assignment submission and/or math notebook. - Reflection: Along with citing AI, you are required to include a brief reflection on what you have learned from the assignment. This reflection should demonstrate your understanding of the material, independent of the AI tool. - Quizzes and Exams: The use of AI tools is strictly prohibited during quizzes and exams. All work submitted for these assessments must be entirely your own. - Inappropriate Use of AI: If inappropriate use or excessive reliance on AI is suspected, a discussion will be arranged. Depending on the situation, you may be required to complete an alternative assignment to ensure your understanding of the course material. These guidelines are in place to support your learning and ensure academic integrity. If you have any questions about the appropriate use of AI, please ask me. **STUDENT ACCESSIBILITY SERVICES STATEMENT.** Kent State University is committed to inclusive and accessible education experiences for all students. This support may take the form of assisting students with basic needs such as food and housing. We recognize that the absence of secure housing and access to food makes it difficult for students to achieve their best in and out of the classroom. If you, or someone you know, are unable to afford groceries or lack a safe, secure, and reliable place to live, please visit the CARES Center basic needs resource website:. Mental health challenges may also make it difficult for students to reach their full potential. KSU's mental health and wellness resource page provides information on education and awareness, mental health services, and advocacy intervention. To learn more, please visit Kent State's mental health resources and support website at. **DIVERSITY, EQUITY, AND INCLUSION**: Kent State University is committed to the creation and maintenance of equitable and inclusive learning spaces. This course is a learning environment where all will be treated with respect and dignity, and where all individuals will have an equitable opportunity to succeed. The diversity that each student brings to this course is viewed as a strength and a benefit. Dimensions of diversity and their intersections include but are not limited to: race, ethnicity, national origin, primary language, age, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, religious affiliation, mental and physical abilities, socio-economic status, family/caregiver status, and veteran status. ***REQUEST FOR RELIGIOUS ACCOMMODATIONS*: The University welcomes individuals from all different faiths, philosophies, religious traditions, and other systems of belief, and supports their respective practices. In compliance with University policy and the Ohio Revised Code, the University permits students to request class absences for up to three (3) days, per term, in order to participate in organized activities conducted under the auspices of a religious denomination, church, or other religious or spiritual organization. Students will not be penalized as a result of any of these excused absences.** **The request for excusal must be made, in writing, no later than fourteen (14) days after the first day of instruction in a particular course and include the date(s) of each proposed absence or request for alternative religious accommodation. The request must clearly state that the proposed absence is to participate in religious activities.** **The request must also provide the particular accommodation(s) you desire.** **You will be notified by me if your request for accommodation is approved, or, if it is approved with modification. I will work with you in an effort to arrange a mutually agreeable alternative arrangement. Before removal, these groups created networks that extended from Wyoming to the Florida Coast and Appalachia and to the northern reaches of Lake Superior. These societies included people of the Shawnee, Seneca-Cayuga, Delaware, Wyandots, Ottawa and Miami. We honor their lives -- both past and present -- and strive to move beyond remembrance toward reflection and responsibility through honest accounts of the past and the development of cultural knowledge and community. **REGISTRATION REQUIREMENT**: **The l**ast day to add a full-term class or change sections of a class is **Sunday, August 25, at 11:59 pm ET.** The **last day to drop any or all courses that meet the full semester before grade of \"W\" is assigned** is **Sunday, September 1, at 11:59 pm ET.** University policy requires all students to be officially registered in each class they are attending.
