These appointments can be in-person or remote. **CLASS TIMES AND LOCATION:** Monday and Wednesday, 9:55 am -- 10:45 am in MSB 108 **COURSE INFORMATION** ====================== **PURPOSE OF THE COURSE: This course is the first in a two-part sequence and provides a pathway for successful completion of Math 10041 Introductory Statistics next semester. This course *together with MATH 10041* will satisfy the Kent Core requirement. Kent Core courses as a whole are intended to broaden intellectual perspectives, foster ethical and humanitarian value, and prepare students for responsible citizenship and productive careers.** **COURSE PREREQUISITE: You are expected to have successfully completed (with a grade of C or better) MATH 00021 here at Kent, or have an overall high school GPA of 3.0 or higher or an appropriate placement score on the university mathematics placement exam.** **COURSE GOALS:** 1. Develop a foundation of statistical reasoning through an intuitive introduction of statistical concepts. 2. Become fluent in the basic algebra skills needed to succeed in Introductory Statistics. 3. Develop effective study and mindset strategies to succeed in future mathematics courses. 4. I will post class materials, including announcements, course notes and other resources, assignments, and grades on this site, so please check this site often. Also, you will access your online learning materials and homework system through this site. **ACTIVE LEARNING: Most of us learn best by doing and by actively engaging with topics and other individuals. So, our c**lass time will be spent working on problems and activities either in a group or individually. In order to get the most out of class time and to be a contributing member of your group, you will be expected to watch short videos or study posted example problems on Canvas BEFORE coming to each class. I hope this course organization will help you to "learn by doing" and to develop a strong understanding of statistical reasoning. **TEXT**: ***Corequisite Support Modules for Statistics*** 1/e by the Pearson Corequisite Support Faculty Team These materials are **part of the University\'s *Flash* *Books* program, and you have already paid for electronic access to this text.** You will have access to the course materials via the "Access Pearson" link on our Canvas Course. Instructions on how to gain initial access through *Flash Books* to your course materials are on our Canvas course site. **Opting out of the *Flash* *Books* program is not wise since you would then need to purchase a separate MLM license which will cost you more than what you paid as part of the *Flash* *Books* program.** **SOFTWARE:** **ACTIVITY BOOK: You need to purchase the *Statistical Thinking Activity* book from the bookstore and bring it to class with you every day. You will work on activities from this activity book every day and these will be collected and graded.** **CALCULATOR:** You need a **[graphing calculator]** for class activities and homework assignments**.** I will be using a *TI-84 Plus* for in-class demonstrations and suggest you purchase one of these if you do not currently own a graphing calculator. Please bring the calculator to class ***every day.*** **ATTENDANCE POLICY**: I expect you to attend every class. More than two unexcused absences will result in a reduction of your course grade by one letter grade. Acceptable reasons for missing class include illness and injury (with documentation), disability related concerns, military service, death in the immediate family, religious observance , academic field trips, and participation in an improved concert or athletic event. Absences For these reasons are considered excused only with written documentation (). Please notify me in advance if you need to miss class. I do not allow make-ups on quizzes or classwork for unexcused absences. If, however, you do miss a class due to unforeseen circumstances, ***it is your responsibility to obtain notes from a group member and complete the daily group assignment on your own***. **Please try to be on time for all classes, but do not hesitate to join late, if necessary. This citation should be included in your assignment submission and/or math notebook. - Reflection: Along with citing AI, you are required to include a brief reflection on what you have learned from the assignment. This reflection should demonstrate your understanding of the material, independent of the AI tool. - Quizzes and Exams: The use of AI tools is strictly prohibited during quizzes and exams. All work submitted for these assessments must be entirely your own. - Inappropriate Use of AI: If inappropriate use or excessive reliance on AI is suspected, a discussion will be arranged.
