Study Guide Mental Health Basics Jan 22, 2025 Test 1.​ Spanning roughly 20 years, childhood and adolescence are marked by dramatic changes in physical, cognitive, and social-emotional skills and capacities. 2.​Mentally healthy children and adolescents enjoy a positive quality of life; function well at home, in school, and in their communities. 3.​Mental health is a state of well-being in which the individual a.​ realizes his or her own abilities, b.​ can cope with the normal stresses of life, c.​ can work productively and fruitfully, d.​ and is able to make a contribution to his or her community. 4.​ It is estimated that only about 17% of U.S adults are considered to be in a state of optimal mental health. 5.​ Mental illness is defined as a.​ all diagnosable mental disorders or b.​ health conditions that are characterized by alterations in thinking, mood, or behavior (or some combination thereof) associated with distress and/or impaired functioning. 6.​ Depression is the most common type of mental disorder, affecting more than 26% of the U.S. adult population. 7.​ Researchers suggest that there are indicators of mental health, representing three domains. These include the following: a.Emotional-wellbeing b.Psychological Well-being c.
