SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY AND SOCIETY ( GE7-STS) 1 “SUBJECT OVERVIEW” MR. POLO JASTY D. MABANAG NO. 1 Science, Technology and Society SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY AND SOCIETY Understands about science, technology and society NO. 1 Science, Technology and Society Science, Technology, and Society (STS) is an exciting interdisciplinary field of study rooted in the history, philosophy, anthropology, and sociology of science and technology (and medicine). It examines deep cultural roots of our techno-scientific society and addresses pressing public policy issues. It constitutes a fundamental aspect of a liberal arts education and is excellent preparation for graduate study or future employment opportunities. NO. 1 Science, Technology and Society 4 PIC 1 WORD NO. 1 Science, Technology and Society NO. 1 Science, Technology and Society SCIENCE NO. 1 Science, Technology and Society NO. 1 Science, Technology and Society TECHNOLOGY NO. 1 Science, Technology and Society NO. 1 Science, Technology and Society SOCIETY NO. 1 Science, Technology and Society NO. 1 Science, Technology and Society THEORY NO. 1 Science, Technology and Society Technology and Society: A Two-Way Street Technological innovations develop as solutions to very specific problems and well-defined needs. There may also be unforeseen innovations, novel applications, and unexpected societal changes. NO. 1 Science, Technology and Society Science Vs. Technology –Technology can exist in the absence of science It encompasses the practices and products that humans develop to modify and control nature for sustenance and comfort NO. 1 Science, Technology and Society Predates the birth of science by many centuries –Agriculture, tool-making, etc. –Initially, technology facilitated scientific progress by leading to observations and experimentation NO. 1 Science, Technology and Society NO. 1 Science, Technology and Society Science, Technology and Society: A Three-Way Street Science-based technology development accelerates economic growth through its effects on industrial productivity NO. 1 Science, Technology and Society New technologies – –Create new products, –Stimulate the creation of new companies and new industries, –Improve existing products and processes, and –Lower manufacturing costs. NO. 1 Science, Technology and Society Trade-offs and/or Benefits of Technology… Technology replaces man-power. Good or bad? Governments investing in technology and scientific research. Good or bad? NO. 1 Science, Technology and Society Rate of Technological Change is Increasing Negative vs. Positive Feedback Loop The positive feedback loop between scientific understanding and technological innovation drives a constantly accelerating rate of technological change. NO. 1 Science, Technology and Society The Nature of Science Knowing how science works puts scientific facts in perspective Science is a process, not a list of discoveries –Scientific process What is the problem with this model? What are the steps? NO. 1 Science, Technology and Society Hypothesis, Theory & Paradigm Hypothesis: one of the steps of the scientific process; an “if-then” statement or educated guess, based on observation, and to be tested, accepted or rejected (as a result of the analysis of data collected) –E.g., If all the classroom doors are green in the C-building, and I am in sitting in a classroom with a green door, I must be in C-building. How would you test that? NO. 1 Science, Technology and Society Theory: Accumulated evidence, over time, performed through a series of reproducible experiments –E.g., evolution NO. 1 Science, Technology and Society Paradigm: A widely accepted model, example or framework. –E.g., the Earth is round –If we wake up one day and discover the Earth is a cube, the paradigm undergoes a shift (paradigm shift) to accept this. NO. 1 Science, Technology and Society Science and Technology Benefits of Technology Hypothesis, Theory & Paradigm NO. 1 Science, Technology and Society Q1.1.1-1 “Benefits of Science and Technology” Pen & Paper none NO. 1 Science, Technology and Society Q1.1.1-1 INSTRUCTION: Make a research (not more than 2 pages) about the effect of science and technology in Communication, Health, Education and Lifestyle of a person. NO. 1 Science, Technology and Society Q1.1.1-1 For Flexible Distance Learning: Screenshot of hand written answer on bondpaper and uploaded at Edmodo Apps For Modular Distance Learning: Handwritten bondpaper and submitted at AISAT Campus Next Meeting, Next Week NO. 1 Science, Technology and Society Q1.1.1-1 “Science and Technology Innovations” Pen & Paper none NO. 1 Science, Technology and Society Q1.1.1-1 List down 3 science innovation and 3 technology innovation with its corresponding advantages(uses) and disadvantages(limitation).
