SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, and SOCIETY Prepared by: SHARMILA A. IMAYSAY, MEd, LPT Subject Professor LEARNING OUTCOMES: 1. Discuss the interactions between science and technology throughout history; 2. Discuss how scientific and technological developments affect society and the environment; 3. Identify the paradigm shifts in history; and 4. Articulate ways by which society is transformed by science and technology. SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, and SOCIETY HOW IMPORTANT IS SCIENCE and TECHNOLOGY TO SOCIETY? Historical Development of Science and Technology in the World - Science and technology have been around since the beginning of time. Their origins can be traced back to the beginning of human life, approximately two (2) million years ago. Historical Development of Science and Technology in the World - The earliest known human artifacts, dating back approximately 2.3 million years, were roughly shaped stones used for chopping and scraping. During Ancient Times - During ancient times, the earliest known human artifacts, dating back approximately 2.3 million years, were roughly shaped stones used for chopping and scraping. Mesopotamian cultures, around 400 BC, recorded some of the earliest evidence of disease symptoms, chemical substances, and astronomical observation instruments. In the Nile Valley of Egypt, during the same period, evidence was found regarding the treatment of wounds and diseases, as well as mathematical calculations currently used in geometry and trigonometry, such as angles, rectangles, triangles, and the volume of a portion of a pyramid. Historical Development of Science and Technology in the World Rise of Philosophers Euclid: Known as the "Father of Geometry," he laid the foundational principles of geometry in his work Elements, which is still influential today. Archimedes: A renowned mathematician, physicist, and engineer, he is considered the founder of engineering mechanics. He accurately approximated the value of π (pi), which is still used today. He also invented significant tools, such as the Archimedean screw (a type of water pump) and a pulley system to lift heavy objects. During Ancient Times: People developed and utilized tools, machines, and techniques without fully understanding how or why they worked, or comprehending their physical and chemical composition. Early Middle Period After the fall of Western Roman Empire 7th century - the coming of Islam - Islamic technology included paper-making, the manufacture of steel and other metals, building and great technical advances in the tools and scientific instruments 8th century - rise of Charlemagne - this was the time of intellectual scientific and technological activities concentrated mainly on Christian faith - Medicine and botanical knowledge was discovered Philosophers 1.Plato: - His contributions span numerous philosophical subfields, including (but not limited to) ethics, cosmology, and metaphysics. 2. Aristotle - Known for developing the scientific method of analysis, which can be applied across various fields of study. 3. Albertus Magnus (Albert the Great) - One of the most universal thinkers, he is credited with the discovery of the element arsenic and the photosensitive properties of silver nitrate, which centuries later contributed to the development of photography. 4. Roger Bacon - He is considered one of the most important proponents of the natural sciences during the Middle Ages. Today, there are many scientific and technological advancements to enhance our daily activities, whether it be as simple as iPad, a computer game, a video game and other digital gadgets for entertainment and information purposes or as vital as an artificial heart for human survival. It is science and technology that revolutionized society into a cyberspace contemporary society. HISTORICAL DEVELOPMENT OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY IN THE PHILIPPINES Before the coming of the Spaniards, there were already indigenous technology that existed. 1. In what ways has technology enhanced the quality of life for people in the Philippines? 2. Have you observed any negative effects of technological advancement in your community? THANK YOU!☺
