WHAT A CHILD CAN DO IN COOPERATION TODAY, SHE OR HE WILL BE ABLE TO DO IT ALONE TOMORROW - LEV VYGOTSKY - WHO IS LEV VYGOTSKY? RUSSIAN-SOVIET PSYCHOLOGIST BORN: NOVEMBER 17, 1896, ORSHA, BELARUS DIED: JUNE 11, 1934, MOSCOW, RUSSIA (37 YEARS) BEST KNOWN FOR HIS SOCIO- LEV SEMYONOVICH VYGOTSKY CULTURAL THEORY WHY DID LEV VYGOTSKY DEVELOP SOCIO-CULTURAL THEORY? He was convinced and believed that parents, caregivers, peers, and the culture at large are responsible for developing higher-order functions. WHAT IS SOCIO-CULTURAL THEORY? SOCIO-CULTURAL THEORY SOCIO-CULTURAL THEORY IS A THEORY THAT HIGHLIGHTS THE INFLUENCE OF SOCIAL INTERACTIONS AND CULTURAL FACTORS ON AN INDIVIDUAL'S DEVELOPMENT. IT EMPHASIZES HOW LEARNING, COGNITION, AND PSYCHOLOGICAL PROCESSES ARE SHAPED BY SOCIAL RELATIONSHIPS, CULTURAL NORMS, AND THE COLLECTIVE KNOWLEDGE OF A PARTICULAR SOCIETY. SITUATIONAL EXAMPLES: ZONE OF PROXIMAL DEVELOPMENT When a child attempts to perform a skill alone, she may not be immediately proficient in it. We refer to this as the Zone of Actual Development. ZPD is used to explain a child’s potential for cognitive development and ability when they are guided through a task rather than asked to do so in isolation. THIS IS ASSISTED BY A “MORE KNOWLEDGABLE OTHER” OR MKO SCAFFOLDING METHOD The support or assistance that lets the child accoplish a task he/she cannot accomplish. CRITICISMS OF VYGOTSKY'S THEORY 1. Vygotsky’s view of active construction of knowledge. Some critics suggest that learning is not always a result of active construction. Rather, learning can sometimes result passively. 2.Some critics also dismiss the idea that Vygotsky’s ideas are culturally universal and believe the concept of scaffolding, which is heavily dependent on verbal instruction, may not be equally useful in all cultures and for all types of learning. DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PIAGET AND VYGOTSKY: PIAGET VYGOTSKY MORE INDIVIDUAL IN FOCUS MORE SOCIAL IN FOCUS BELIEVED THAT THERE ARE DID NOT PROPOSE STAGES UNIVERSAL STAGES OF BUT EMPHASIZED ON COGNITIVE DEVELOPMENT CULTURAL FACTORS IN COGNITIVE DEVELOPMENT DID NOT GIVE MUCH STRESSED THE ROLE OF EMPHASIS ON LANGUAGE LANGUAGE IN COGNITIVE DEVELOPMENT SUMMARY: MINI QUIZ BEE Q1: WHO CREATED THE SOCIAL-CULTURAL THEORY OF COGNITIVE DEVELOPMENT?
