Module Subject Code CS 1 Computer Science 1 Module Code 4.0 ICT Systems Lesson Code 4.3 Software Time Frame 30 minutes TA ATA Components Tasks (min) (min a )b Target By the end of this learning guide module, the students should 1 be able to: 1. Write his/her own definition of software in relation to the function of the hardware. 2. Compare and contrast types of software by identifying examples for each 3. Write a personal reflection about the use of software in personal life. Hook In the previous topic on ICT, you learned that one of the 4 ICT components is the software. Now, look and analyze this picture. Figure 1: Communication Gap and the Software Solution (Beekman & Beekman, 2012) Based on what you learned in the previous topic on ICT, to whom does the person in the picture refer to? To which component of the ICT does the computer refer to? Ignite How would you interpret the picture? Can you please 1 write your thoughts about this picture in your notebook? You 5 have 2 minutes to do it. To further understand about the role of software in the ICT system, please watch this 2-minute video on youtube in this link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vG_qmtdBPTU. After watching the video, read what you have written in your notebook. Do the things you have written coincide with what you have watched? CS 1 Page 1 of 5 So what is software? What is its role in the normal processing of the computer hardware? Software is a set of instructions that tell the computer hardware what to do. It consists of commands that tells the computer hardware how to do two (2) things: 1) how to manage and operate itself and 2) how to manage and control other software that would help users with their problems or computing needs. With this, we can say that there are several types of software: 1. System software - coordinates and manages all the hardware resources’ operations and does behind-the- scenes work Examples: Operating System, Language Processor, Utility Software Language Utility Software Operating Processor System the collection a software software that of software program analyse and that directs a designed or used maintain a computer's to perform tasks computer operations, such as Examples controlling processing include antivirus, and program code to file management scheduling the machine code tools, execution of Examples compression other include tool, disk programs, and interpreter, management managing compiler and tool, disk storage, translator cleanup tool, and input/output, disk and defragmenter communicatio n resources Figure 2: Classification of System Software ( Nulla, M., 2020) 2. Application Software - generally a program or collection of programs used by end users to solve problems or meet their computing needs. Examples: General-purpose Software, Specific-purpose Software CS 1 Page 2 of 5 a type of a type of software application that can created to execute be used for a variety one specific task of generic tasks Examples include Examples include Enrolment System, MS Word MS Payroll System, Excel, and MS POS System PowerPoint, calculator, MS Paint, Adobe AcrobatPurpose General Reader Specific Software Purpose (bespoke) Software (customized) Figure 3: Two Types of Application Software (Nulla, 2020) Navigate I. There are two general types of software: System and Application Software. System software includes Operating System, Language Processor, Utility Software. Application software includes general-purpose (bespoke) software and specific-purpose (customized) software. 1. Write your own personal reflection about the use of software in your daily life. Have it computerized and upload your work in the LMS as assignment or submit as hardcopy. References: 1. Rouse, Margaret(April 2006).
