**Skills, Techniques, and Production in Contemporary Art: Collage, Decalcomania, Decoupage, Frottage, Montage, Trapunto, and Digital Applications** ***Contemporary Art*** refers to artworks produced today, such as painting, sculpture, photography, installation, performance, and video art. In contemporary art, we have techniques that Filipino artists employ in their artworks. These include the 7 techniques that we just encountered earlier in our activity: 1. **Collage** - From the French word *coller,* meaning 'to glue,' it is the artistic process of gluing and assembling various materials to a flat surface. Collage can refer to both the actual procedure of cutting and pasting. - Collage is made by adhering flat elements such as newspaper or magazine cut-outs, printed text, illustrations, photographs, cloth strings, etc. To a flat surface to create a thick layer that is almost like a relief sculpture. 2. **Decalcomania** ![](media/image2.jpeg) - Involves painting with gouache on paper or glass, then transferring an inverted version of that image onto a different surface, like canvas. To create a reversed image of that painting onto another surface. 3. **Decoupage** - A decorative technique that involves adhering cut-out paper to an object, often in combination with paint effects, gold leaf, and other embellishments. The paper is then sealed with multiple layers of transparent varnish, creating a durable and visually appealing finish. 4. Frottage ![](media/image4.jpeg) - A surrealistic and 'Automatic' method of creative production that involves creating a rubbing of a textured surface using a pencil or other drawing material. 5. **Montage** - The Art or process of making a composite picture by bringing together a number or different pictures or parts of pictures into a single composition and arranging these, as by superimposing one on another, so that they form a blended whole while remaining distinct. A picture so made. 6. **Trapunto** ![](media/image6.jpeg) - (Italian for quilted or embroidered) "to quilt," is a method of quilting that is also called "Stuffed technique," a puffy, decorative feature, trapunto utilizes at least two layers, the underside of which is slit and padded, producing a raised surface on the quilt. 7. **Digital Application** - An artistic work or practice that uses digital technology as part of the creative or presentation process. Since the 1970's, various names have been used to describe the process, including computer art and multimedia art. Digital art is itself placed under the larger umbrella term new media art.
