SOC109-SHS-SG-WK1 FUTURE READY FUTURE SMART PROGRAM STUDY GUIDE SEPTEMBER Subject EMPOWERMENT TECHNOLOGIES Introduction to Information and Communication Topic Technologies Level Grade 11 Week Week 1 School Year 1st Quarter/SY 2020-2021 I. Objectives - Recognize how ICT affects our daily lives and our nation. - Understand the features of the World Wide Web. - Learn the different trends in ICT and use them to their advantage. II. Discussion Information and Communication Technology One common misconception about ICT is that it is only about computers. But ICT is a lot more. What is ICT? Let us first define it word-by-word. Information – Facts or knowledge about anything or anyone. It is given to whoever asks for details about something or someone. Communication – An act of exchanging or conveying information, messages, ideas, news, or content. Technology – Science or knowledge that is created to solve problems and help with our daily needs. It can be a tool, a machine, a device, or an invention that makes life easier. So basically, ICT is a term that uses the technology that we have today in exchanging information using unified communication tools such as computers, smartphones, the media, the Internet, etc. ©2020 Good Samaritan Colleges Page 1 of 11 All rights reserved. SOC109-SHS-SG-WK1 State of ICT in the Philippines According to the infographic above, As of January 2020, the total population of the Philippines is 108.8 Million. What’s intriguing is that there are 173.2 million mobile phone connections which is a way bigger number than our current population. So, it means that for every Filipino that you encounter, there is a great chance that he/she owns a mobile phone and some of them might even own more than one device. It can also be seen from the infographic that Filipinos usually use the Internet on social media. In fact, the Philippines has the highest social media usage rate in the world. In terms of economics, ICT-related jobs are huge in the Philippines. International companies have given us the title “ICT Hub of Asia” mainly because of the growing number of BPO (Business Process Outsourcing) companies or most commonly called the “Call Centers” opening in our country. ICT also had a huge role in education during the CoViD-19 pandemic. The Department of Education (DepEd) is thinking of ways to replace the modality of education from “face-to-face” learning to either “home-based” or "blended learning”. Obviously, ICT will also play a major role in this transition. Some schools are doing online classes using web conference applications or social media so that students can still continue learning at home. World Wide Web (WWW) The World Wide Web (or simply “the web”) is a collection of online resources that are identified by URLs (Uniform Resource Locator), that uses HTTP (Hypertext Transfer Protocol) to gather the information from web servers to be displayed on web browsers and can only be accessed using the Internet. It is a term created in 1989 by Tim Berners-Lee, a British computer scientist. ©2020 Good Samaritan Colleges Page 2 of 11 All rights reserved. SOC109-SHS-SG-WK1 Web 1.0 vs Web 2.0 When the web was created, the first versions of webpages use Web 1.0 or the static webpages. Some call it the read-only web because literally, that is the only thing that you can do with it. The contents of the pages are “as is” and the users cannot add their content. As our websites evolve, pretty soon the Web 2.0 was created. The Web 2.0 or the dynamic web pages is an upgrade to the web 1.0 where dynamic pages were added. It means that what you see on the pages you visit might not be the same for the others. It is also known as the read and write web. Examples of dynamic web pages include social media sites, wikis, blogs, forums, cloud computing websites, and web applications. The majority of the websites that are available today are using Web 2.0. Features of Web 2.0 1. Folksonomy – this feature lets users categorize or organize information seen on the page using keywords or tags. The best example of this feature is Hashtags. When you click or search for a hashtag, posts that contain the same hashtag will appear on the page. 2. Rich User Experience – this feature makes browsing the web more convenient and interactive. It lets users modify how they want to view online content based on their preferences and input. Because of this feature, most websites that we visit today looks more like an application instead of a page. Another example of this feature is when you log-on to your Facebook account, the posts that you see on your feed are modified using the data from your account. Usually, it will prioritize showing posts from your closest friends or pages that you often visit. 3. User Participation – One of the key features of dynamic web pages is that it enables users to contribute to the website. With this feature, users can also interact with each other by means of comments, reactions, ratings, surveys, reviews, or feedback. For example, before you buy a product from an online shopping site, you must first ensure the quality of the product that you are about to purchase. To do that, you first look for reviews or feedback from customers who recently bought the same product to see if they are satisfied with their purchase. 4. Long Tail – These are services that can be availed only when needed. Instead of purchasing a product or service, users can rent them instead. Some companies allow time- ©2020 Good Samaritan Colleges Page 3 of 11 All rights reserved. SOC109-SHS-SG-WK1 based subscriptions like Netflix and Spotify where users pay monthly fees to avail premium services and can unsubscribe anytime. On the other hand, some companies offer pay-per- consumption services where users only pay for what they actually use. For example, Google Drive offers free storage for people who have an account. Users can store up to 15Gb of files into their Drive. But if the user has exceeded the free service, they would have to pay additional fees to get access to more storage space. 5. Mass Participation – One of the reasons why there is a vast volume of data on the internet is because anyone who has access can add their content. It doesn’t matter where the data is coming from, or from what culture as long as you are connected to the internet. Trends in ICT 1. Technological Convergence – a term where two or more technological devices merge into new forms of technology that benefits our daily lives as the digital age arises. An example of this is the mobile phones that we have today. Back then, we need to have separate devices for taking pictures, playing games, listening to music, communicating wirelessly, and browsing the web. Today, we can fit all of those features in one handy device that we call the “smartphone”. As our tech evolves more features are still being added into our phones. Another good example of technological convergence is the Internet because of the different types of media that we can access through it. 2. Social Media – these are websites or applications that enable users to interact, share information, collaborate, and communicate with other users. People nowadays spend more time on social media websites when using the internet. According to We are Social, Philippines’ internet users on average spend 3 hours and 53 minutes daily in using social media. There are 6 types of social media: a. Social Network – Allows users to navigate into a virtual community where they can interact with other people who has the same interests or background. (Examples: Facebook, LinkedIn) b. Social News - From the word “news”, people can share their own news items or articles about current events. In these platforms, anyone can become a digital citizen journalist. (Examples: Reddit, Digg) c. Media Sharing sites – these are platforms that allow you to upload and share media contents such as videos, music, and images. Most of the websites that we visit today are capable of sharing media content. (Examples: YouTube, TikTok, Instagram) d. Bookmarking Sites – these are platforms that allow users to share images, videos, ideas, articles, etc. on a single page but linked to different websites. It helps users categorize their content using tags or preferences. (Example: Pinterest) ©2020 Good Samaritan Colleges Page 4 of 11 All rights reserved. SOC109-SHS-SG-WK1 e. Blogs – derived from the term “weblog”. These are websites that allow users to create posts where other users can read and give comments. Blog contents are usually about travel or personal stories, news, tutorials, recipes, and reviews. Some bloggers also use this content to share their talents such as playing musical instruments, writing stories, photography, etc. (Example: WordPress) f. Microblogging – is a social media platform where people are can post short messages or stories. It can be about an experience, an idea, a message that you want to be broadcasted, or for sharing media. These kinds of webpages usually have a character limit. (Examples: Twitter, Tumblr) 3. Mobile Technologies – The word mobile means something that can be moved or carried easily. In other words, portable. Mobile devices include laptops, tablets, and smartphones. Mobile phones are usually used as a communication device. Smartphones have evolved rapidly over the past few years; our phones now have additional features that have greatly affected the way we do things. For those functions to work properly, a smartphone must have an operating system installed to it. Examples of Mobile Operating Systems iOS (Apple) – a closed-source operating system that is exclusively designed for Apple devices such as the iPhone and iPad. Android OS (Google Inc) – an open-source operating system that is based on Linux. Blackberry OS – used in Blackberry phones Windows Phone OS (Microsoft) – a closed source operating system created for windows phones. Symbian – One of the first smartphone OS, mostly used on Nokia devices. WebOS – Mobile OS that is used for smart appliances. 4. Internet of Things (IoT) – It is a concept for devices that are interconnected to each other with the help of the Internet. IoT provides a unique language that allows smart devices to communicate with each other and optimize the collection of data. Data collection is necessary because it improves how these devices can address specific needs. Basically, devices that have the word “smart” next to it are IoT devices. From smart TVs to smart refrigerators, or wearable devices like a smartwatch and smart glasses. As long as it is a device that can be connected to the internet to improve its functionality, it is part of IoT. Another example is a car that has sensors that transmit reports using cloud servers to improve its logistics and easily detect causes of malfunctions. References IT Works, Inc. (2016).
