PAGE 6-30 Three Domains Of Science **Science as a Way of Knowing** (Scientific Inquiry) **Science as a Way of Doing** (Scientific Enterprise) -Science can be thought of as a collection of the different scientific fields or content disciplines -No single method for all scientists to follow -Can be done in any sequence -May involve repeating the same steps to account for new information and ideas -Includes: Observation, inference, experimentation, and chance discovery **Science as a Way of Looking** (Scientific Worldview) Scientific skills and attitudes: #### **3. Measurements** #### **4. Biomolecules** #### **Monosaccharides** Monosaccharides are the simplest form of carbohydrates and consist of a single sugar unit. They are the building blocks (monomers) for more complex carbohydrates. -Cannot be broken down into a smaller/simpler form, and usually called a simple sugar #### **Disaccharides** Disaccharides are formed by the condensation of two monosaccharides. #### **Polysaccharides** Polysaccharides are long chains of monosaccharides linked by glycosidic bonds. ### Proteins Proteins are composed of amino acids and perform a variety of functions in the body. Enzymes: Catalyze biochemical reactions (e.g., amylase, lactase). Structural Proteins: Provide support and shape (e.g., collagen, keratin). Transport Proteins: Carry molecules (e.g., hemoglobin, myoglobin). Antibodies: Help fight infections (e.g., immunoglobulins). Hormones: Regulate body processes (e.g., insulin, growth hormone). Contractile Proteins: Involved in muscle contraction (e.g., actin, myosin). ### **Lipids** #### **Triglycerides** Triglycerides are composed of one molecule of glycerol and three fatty acids. They are the main form of stored energy in animals and plants. #### **5. Atwater System** #### **6. Data Tables and Graphs** **Key Features**: #### **3. Measurements** **Basic Concepts in Measurement**: #### **4. Biomolecules** #### **5. Atwater System** The **Atwater System** is a way to estimate the energy content of food: #### **6. Data Tables & Graphs** ### **Fundamental vs. Derived Quantities** #### **Fundamental Quantities** Fundamental quantities (also called base quantities) are the basic physical quantities that cannot be defined in terms of other quantities. They are the building blocks of measurement systems. **Electric Current** (I) -- measured in amperes (A) These quantities are independent and defined by universal standards. #### **Derived Quantities** Derived quantities are those that can be expressed in terms of the fundamental quantities. They are formed by combining one or more fundamental quantities using mathematical operations (multiplication, division, etc.).
