Pole Dive & its variations Sheetal Chouhan, Asst. Coach, Kho Kho, SAI,NSSC, Bangalore Pole Dive Pole Dive is one of the most important techniques used by the Chaser to score a point. Attacker dives (falls) on the post with firm support and intercepts the path of the defender by stretching his hand. SITUATIONS:- When the Defender has settled at the post. When the Defender is not settled at the post. When the Defender is very close to the post. (When he is about to settle). When the defender takes wrong entry. When the defender is tired. When new batch is entering & defender’s not well settled. When the defender got fully faked & stood at the post. When the defender is slow in take off from the post i.e. when he turns the post slowly or closely and when pushes the post slowly. When the Defender’s are clubbing near the post. When the defender weak at the post. When the combination of 2 attackers (7th & 8th) put more psychological pressure on defender. CLASSIFICATION OF POLE DIVE 1. 3step (proximal) Running pole dive Fake & pole dive 2. 2 step (distal) (any side) 1. 2step (proximal) 2. 3step (distal) The attacker who performs the pole dive shall make sure that the foot of the proximal leg should planted near the junction of center lane and post line. So it is important to know, that to gain maximum reach the toe should closer to center lane. Proximal diagonally towards the post TEACHING STAGES:- 1. Reaching the post. 2. Falling on the post. 3. Holding the post. 4. Swinging of the arm. 5. Follow through. 1.Reaching (Stepping) towards the post:- Variations:- i.e. keep or slightly behind the post line or for away from the post line. So it is important to know that to gain maximum reach, the leg is kept closer to the center lane. Now fall on the post, by holding the post either form arm grip or elbow grip. (a) Elbow grip:- The post will be hold between the biceps and fore arm. This is very firm grip: chances of losing the balance will be very less. b) Fore arm grip with finger support:- In this variation, reach is more than the elbow grip, but chances of losing the balance will be very more. While falling on the post, the attacker will at the same time swing his hand, which is closer to the center lane and stretch completely towards the defender. Fixing the target on defender’s torso. There are 3 variations in hand swinging. 1.Parallel swing:- Generally parallel swing of the hand will be use to touch the defender. Attacker swings his hand parallel to the ground with a view to touch the defender’s torso. 2.Diagonal swing:- Diagonal swing helps the attacker in touching the shoulder of the defender. 3.Sudden Jerk:- The attacker, instead of swinging his hand will suddenly thrust his hand towards the defender. After swinging the hand attacker hold the post with the hand and keeps distal leg inside the free zone & turn the post or cross the post line & change direction.
