**Early Childhood** ------------------- **Calamba** -- Rizal's hometown, a hacienda town that belonged to the Dominican Order. Near it was Mount Makiling. **Un Recuerdo A Mi Pueblo (In Memory of My Town)** - Rizal's poem about his hometown **Concepcion (Concha)** -- Rizal's little sister who he fondly loved but sadly passed away when Rizal was just 4 years old in 1865. **Manong Jose** -- a nickname by the Hermanos and Hermanas Terceras for being seriously devout. **Father Leoncio Lopez** -- The priest he esteemed and respected in Calamba during his boyhood. **June 6, 1868** -- Jose and His father left Calamba to go on a pilgrimage to Antipolo, in order to fulfill his mother's vow which was made when Jose was born. Teodora could not accompany them because she had given birth to Trinidad. **Angelus Prayer** -- A prayer done by his family during the Angelus **The Story of the Moth** -- A story told by Dona Teodora that gave him the profoundest impression on him. **Sa Aking Mga Kababata (To My Fellow Children)** -- Rizal's first poem in the native language written at the age of eight. **Early Education in Calamba and Binan** ---------------------------------------- ### **Early education** **Reading, Writing, Arithmetic, and Religion** - A typical schooling that a son of an illustrado family could receive the 4 R's. **Dona Teodora** -- The first teacher and tutor of Rizal. At the age of 3 he learned the alphabet. **The Private Tutors of Rizal** 1. Maestro Celestino 2. Maestro Lucas Padua 3. Leon Monroy -- the third tutor who honed his basic Latin, reading, and writing skills. **June, 1869** -- Left Calamba for Binan accompanied by Paciano. **School of Maestro Justiniano Aquino Cruz** -- The school of Rizal in Binan, which was the house of the teacher a small nipa hut. The teacher of rizal was described by him as a tall, thin, long-necked, with a sharp nose and a body slightly bent forward, and he used to wear a *[sinamay]* shirt, woven by the skilled hands of the women of Batangas. **Pedro** -- The bully of Rizal. **Tio Manuel** -- Learned from him the art of wrestling. **Andres Salandman** -- Challenged Rizal to an arm-wrestling match. **Juancho** -- The painter who Rizal took a liking to alongside his classmate Jose Guevarra. **December 17, 1870** -- Left Binan after one year and a half of schooling there. **\ ** ### **Injustice to Hero's Mother** Before June of 1872, Dona Teodora was suddenly arrested on a malicious charge that she and her brother, Jose Albero, tried to poison the latter's perfidious wife. **Jose Alberto** -- A rich Binan ilustrado the brother of Dona Teodora his wife accused him and his sister of trying to poison her. **Antonio Vivencio del Rosario** -- A menial of the friars who assisted in arresting Dona Teodora. The Spanish lieutenant forced her to walk from Calamba to Santa Cruz a distance of 50 km, she languished for two years and a half until the *[Manila Royal Audiencia (Supreme Court)]* acquitted her of the alleged crime. Dona Teodora was defended by the most famous lawyers of Manila. - **Messrs. Francisco de Marcaida** - **Manuel Marzan** ### **Martyrdom of Gom-Bur-Za** **January 20, 1872** -- The Cavite mutiny happened with about 200 Filipino soldiers and Cavite workmen because of the abolition of their usual privileges including exemption from tribute and polo by the reactionary Governor Rafael de Izquierdo **Lamadrid** -- The leader of those soldiers and workers, a Filipino sergeant. **GOMBURZA** (Fathers Mariano Gomez, Jose Burgos, and Jacinto Zamora) -- The leaders of the secular movement to Filipinize the Philippine parishes. **February 17, 1872** -- The GOMBURZA was executed at sunrise by order of Governor General Rafael de Izquierdo. *(The mutiny had no connection to the GOMBURZA, the 200 soldiers and Cavite workers instigated the mutiny because their usual privileges exception from tribute and polo were abolished by the governor general)* **El Filibusterismo** -- The 2nd novel of rizal made to Gom-Bur-Za
