The Synergy of Technology with Basic Learning Theories,Principles and Practices INTRODUCTION a. Define synergy and discuss its effects to teaching and learning: b. Relate the use of technology with the development of 21" century skills. Explain why teachers should develop in their students, the 21" century skills; C. Discuss the basic learning theories and tell how synergy with specific educational technology can be achieved; d. Give the significance of the basic learning theories and tell how educational technology can enhance them to produce synergistic effect on teaching and learning. SYNERGY DEFINED *The term synergy is compounded words taken from synchronize and enerey which can be stated also as synchronized energy. *This is in line with Gestalt Psychology, which states that the sum of the whole is greater than the sum of the aggregate parts. Technology and the development 21st Century Skills *Teachers are essential for facilitating learning, developing independent learners, and integrating technology effectively. They must develop 21st-century skills for authentic learning and transforming students into creative, critical, and analytical thinkers. DIGITAL AGE LITERACY SKILLS This is ability to use the * computer and its various applications to search, process, organize and present information EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION SKILLS It is the sharing of information, thoughts, feelings and emotions, a process of encoding and decoding ideas and concepts. CRITICAL THINKING SKILLS * This involves the higher order thinking skills Iike analysis, synthesis and evaluation (Bloom's Taxonomy).. HIGH PRODUCTIVITY SKILLS *It facılitates the execution of the different learning processes. SOCIETAL VALUES SKILLS *This involves the development of favorable relationship and concern for the welfare of other. *Teaching and learning must not be purely. technology BASIC LEARNING THEORIES VS TECHNOLOGY APPLICATION CONSTRUCTIVIST THEORY the Constructivist Learning Theory underscored that learning is an active process where learners acquire and construct new ideas or concepts based on their past or current knowledge and experiences (Brunner, I1986 cited by Madarcos, 2003) TWO FUNDAMENTAL CHARACTERISTICS OF COGNITIVE FUNCTIONING ORGANIZATION Is the systematic arranging of perceptual and cognitive information into meaningful patterns called cognitive structures. ADAPTATION is the process thru which the person seeks an equilibrium or balance between what he/she perceives, knows and understands. SYSTEMATIC BEHAVIOUR THEORY *According to this theory, behavior involves an interaction between stimuli in the environment and the responses which the organism makes toward the stimuli. *Central to Huil's Theory is reinforcement which means that any set of condition which when applied properly reinforces learning. COGNITIVE LEARNING THEORY *The term cognitive comes from latin word cognoscere, which means the act or process of knowing. *Its popularized by Piaget and he worked extensively on understanding how children of various ages obtain knowledge of the world around them. BASIC PRINCIPLE OF TEACHING AND EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY BASIC PRINCIPLE OF TEACHING The basic principles of teaching, emphasized by international and local authors, aim to make learning more effective and permanent. Gregorio's classical and easy-to-understand principles are the basis for discussion, based on years of teaching experiences PRINCIPLE OF ACTIVE INVOLVEMENT *This implies that for learning to take place, the student must be focused or engaged directly with the activity or task where he may draw knowledge, concepts, principles, attitudes, skills or habits. PRINCIPLE OF CONNECTIVITY *This involves the building of relationships or linkages between and among experiences. PRINCIPLE OF INTEGRATION *This refers to the organization or putting together diverse elements to form a unified and harmonious whole. PRINCIPLE OF INTENTION (MOTIVATION AND INTEREST *Learning does not take place unless the student has a purpose or intention for undertaking the activity. PRINCIPLE OF CREATIVITY AND INNOVATION This refers to the ability to produce an original concept or idea and translate it to some forms of expression like a piece of art or craft, a musical score or a literary piece. PRINCIPLE OF DISCOVERY *This is what psychologists' term as the "Aha!" experience. PRINCIPLE OF SOCIALIZATION *Learning ushers the individual to the prevailing culture of his environment PRINCIPLE OF UNDERSTANDING *One cannot learn anything unless he/she comprehends the situation, the process, the concept, the philosophy and the meaning of the learning task or tasks. PRINCIPLE OF COOPERATIVE PROCESS *Learning is more impressive if the students or the pupils share in planning and organizing the learning activities with the guidance of the teacher. GENERAL GUIDELINES IN USING EDUCATIONAL INSTRUCTIONAL TECHNOLOGY Align Technology with Learning Objectives *Make sure that the technology tools you chose are directly related to your instructional objectives and curriculum goals. Plan for Effective Integration: *Plan your lectures carefully to ensure that technology is effortlessly integrated. Consider how the tools will help students engage, comprehend, and retain. Provide Adequate Training: *Ensure that both you and your students have the necessary training to use the technology effectively. This includes technical skills and pedagogical knowledge. Create a Safe and Supportive Learning Environment *Set clear expectations for technology use, including proper online behavior and digital citizenship. Differentiate Instruction *Utilize technology to provide personalized learning experiences that cater to the diverse needs of your students. Evaluate and Reflect *Regularly assess the effectiveness of your technology integration and make adjustments as needed. Reference American Psychological Association. (2020). What is the importance of fieltrip? One of the instructional materials used to attain instructional objectives is fieldtrip SELECTION MATERIALS *Do the materials give a true picture of the ideas they present? To avoid misconceptions, it is always good to ask when the material was produced. *Do the materials contribute meaningful content to the topic under study? Does the material help you achieve the instructional objective? *Is the material appropriate for the age, intelligence, and experience of the leamers? SELECTION MATERIALS *Is the physical condition of the material satisfactory? *An example, is a photograph properly mounted? *Is there a teacher's guide to provide a briefing for effective use? THE PROPER USE OF MATERIALS PPPF P-PREPARE YOURSELF *You know your lesson objective and what you expect from the class after the session and why you have selected such particular instructional material. P-PRESENT YOUR STUDENTS *Set class expectations and learning goals. It is sound practice to give them guide questions for them to be able to answer during the discussion P-PRESENT THE MATERIALS *under the best possible conditions. Many teachers are guilty of the R.O.G Syndrome. FOLLOW UP *Remember that you use instructional material to achieve an objective, not to kill time, nor to give yourself break, neither to merely entertain the class.
