FUNCTIONS OF Quarter 2: Lesson 7 COMMUNICATION Understanding: - Speaking is a communication skill that serves three functions in society: regular/control, social interaction and information, and motivation and emotional expression. The behaviors of individuals are controlled and regulated when they receive oral instructions. When they speak with one another in meaningful conversations, they can interact and consequently share information. Motivations and emotions are also made concrete by using certain spoken words. Five Functions of Communication: Control or Regulation Motivation Social Interaction Emotional Expression Information Dissemination Control or Regulation Communication functions to control behavior. Every organization has its regulations and these regulations are communicated to all members in various ways. Examples: 1. A small organization such as a family has its house rules which every member has to follow. 2. The school implements rules which students and other members of the school community are obliged to follow. Social Interaction Communication allows individuals to interact with others. Because of the needs to interact daily, people communicate. Examples: 1. A student has to talk with his parents regarding his allowance and school requirements. 2. He has to talk to the driver of the jeepney o r b u s , i f n o t t o t h e L RT o r M RT ticketing clerk. Motivation Communication motivates or encourages people to live better. Motivation is either internal or external. Internal Motivation Comes from within. It is something personal. for example: - A student is motivated to study hard because of his desires to graduate with honors. External Motivation Emanates from the outside or from people surrounding him. for example: - A student is motivated to study hard because o f h i s f a t h e r ’s p r o m i s e t o g i v e h i m a n expensive car once he graduates with honors. Encouraging words serve tp stimulate people to perform or do better, that is, motivate them in a positive way. Emotional Expression C o m m u n i c a t i o n f a c i l i t a t e s p e o p l e ’s expression of their feelings and emotions. Communication does not involve ideas only, it also involves emotions. As an individual communicates, he/she emotes. Example: When one informs another about the impending supertyphoon, the informer may express various emotions in different situations. - As he informs his loved ones, he may show fear because their house is not a safe place to stay when their is a supertyphoon. Information Dissemination Communication functions to convey information. Many events or incidents happen everyday. These occurences affect people so they have to be informed. Examples: 1. A new policy to be implemented schoolwide has to be made known to all members before its implementation. 2. The school admin must tell all students enrolled in board courses the grades that they have to earn for them to be retained. Points to remember: üSpeaking functions in five ways. üIt regulates and controls behavior, as in the case of following orders or instructions. üI t i s i s e d f o r S o c i a l I n t e r a c t i o n a n d S h a r i n g Information through dynamic, clear, and purposeful conversation. üIt Motivates individuals to express what and how they feel through the use of certain words that depict a variety of emotions.
