## Mometrix ### Communication - Babbles and may be able to say one or two words besides "mama" or "dada". Understands basic vocabulary, such as "no" and "cookie". Babbling follows speech like rhythm when talking. ### 10-12 months: * **Sleep** - Continues to sleep 10-11 hours at night with 2 naps in the daytime. * **Growth** - Gains 3-5 ounces a week and 1 cm/month. Head and chest circumference are equal. Birth weight tripled by 12 months. * **Mobility** - Can make marks on paper with pens or crayons. Fits objects through holes. Can stand alone and walk holding onto furniture. Can sit from standing position. * **Feeding** - Breastfeeding or bottle-feeding 3-4 times daily and starting with "sippy" cup. Eating solid foods, both prepared baby foods and soft home-cooked foods. Enjoys finger foods and may resist being fed. * **Urine/feces** - May smear feces. Holding urine for longer periods of time, especially girls. * **Senses** - Watches and listens, engaging in activities. * **Communication** - Understands many *words*. Uses "mama" and "dada" intentionally and may use a few other words. Plays patty-cake and peek-a-boo games. Enjoys repetition. ### 1-2 years: * **Sleep** - Sleeps 13 to 14 hours daily, usually with 2 naps during the daytime. * **Growth** - Gains 8 oz/month and 3-5 in/year. Anterior fontanel closes. * **Mobility** - Begins with first steps and by 2 walks and runs and can go up and down stairs. * **Diet** - Eats 3 meals and 2-3 snacks daily. Whole cow's milk can be taken after 1 year, 2-3 cups daily. Some may breastfeed. Child can consume wide range of foods. * **Toileting** - Between 18-24 months, some children show an interest in potty training. * **Communication** - Begins with one word and grows. Learns names for common objects and begins trying to communicate with simple words leading to short sentences around 2 with vocabulary of 30-50 words. May show apprehension with strangers and anger using temper tantrums. ### 2 to 3 years: * **Sleep** - Sleeps 12.5 to 13.5 hours per day, usually with 1 nap during the daytime. * **Growth** - Gains 3-5 lb/year and 3.5-5 in/year. * **Mobility** - Can run steadily, jump on two feet, and climb. Scribbling becomes more intentional and can draw simple shapes. Makes effort to color in the lines. Able to undress at 2 and dress at 3. Can throw a ball overhand. Plays side by side and begins to interact with others. * **Diet** - Can switch to low-fat milk, 2-3 cups daily along with a regular well-balanced meal of meat, fruits, vegetables, and grains. Should limit fruit juice to 2-4 oz/day because of high sugar content. Should not be receiving bottle feedings. * **Toileting** - Most children become potty-trained some time during this year. * **Communication** - Begins to talk in short 3-word sentences and to understand rules. Begins to use pronouns (I, me, you) and can talk about feelings.
