You shall not profane my holy name, that I may be sanctifies among the people of Israel: I am the Lord; I sanctify you.” - Leviticus 22:31-32 What does the Lord command us to do in relation to His name? what’s in a name? what’s in a name? Ø reputation Ø represents person’s identity. Ø we want everything nice and honorable to be associated with our names because our names are reflections of who we are. Ø one of the ways to honor God is to respect His name and to obey Him. God wants us to treat His name holy because He is holy. (Leviticus 11:44) what’s in a name? Ø wrongful use of God’s name means using it in vain. Ø using God’s name in vain is equal to disrespect, abuse, misuse, blasphemy, and cursing of the Lord’s name. Ø “To honor” means “to treat with importance”, which is the opposite of taking something in “vain”. Ø profanity or blasphemy is a violation against the Second Commandment. what’s in a name? Ø since God is the source of all goodness, He deserves all the goodness. When we do good and obey the commandments, we honor His holy name. Ø God intends that someday we will bear his Holy name, “If you conquer, I will make you a pillar in the temple of my God; you will never go out of it. I will write on you the name of my God,...” - Revelation 3:12 Ø the 2nd commandment teaches us the value of names and those of others. Lesson 3.12 God’s Appointed Time for Us (Third Commandment) First Commandment: “I am the Lord your God, you shall have no other gods before me. You shall not make for yourself an idol.” Second Commandment: “You shall not use the name of the Lord you God in vain.” Third Commandment: “Remember the Sabbath Day and keep it holy.” how do you spend your free time? Third Commandment Ø Sabbath recalls three important themes: 1. God’s rest on the 7th day of creation. 2. Israel’s liberation from slavery in Egypt. 3. Sealing of God’s covenant with His chosen people. Ø 1. first theme: REST. The Jewish word for rest is menuha. To rest does not mean to stop creating; but to inspires recreation. Ø Rest is a time to be in the holy presence of God. It is a freedom for God’s love, inner peace and joy. Third Commandment Ø 2. 2nd theme: LIBERATION. Israelites’ liberation from oppression in Egypt. Ø This inspires us to realize our social responsibility towards to oppressed and the discriminated. We are called to help the liberated people. Ø “The mass has been offered. Go in peace to love and serve the Lord.” Ø 3. 3rd theme: COVENANT. Sabbath was a sign of God’s “irrevocable covenant” of love with His chosen people. Third Commandment Ø “Sunday is the day on which the paschal mystery is celebrated... and is to be observed as the foremost holy day of obligation in the universal Church.” Ø “Also to be observed are the day of the... q Nativity of the Lord Jesus Christ - December 25 q Epiphany - 1st Sunday of January q Ascension of Christ - 40 Days after Easter q Feast of Mary the Mother of God - January 1 q Immaculate Conception - December 8 q Mary’s Assumption - August 15 q Feast of Saint Joseph - March 19 q Feast of Sts. Peter and Paul - June 29 Third Commandment Ø the CFC cites three modern attitudes that can lead to idolatry or neglect of Worship-- hightened anxiety, hyper- activism, and success-orientation. Ø The Third Commandment prevents us from absolutizing our own achievements by preserving the sense of God’s gracious presence... Ø the Third Commandment teaches us to rest, and to worship God, our Provider and Creator. Lesson 3.13 Love Grows in the Family (Fourth Commandment) First Commandment: “I am the Lord your God, you shall have no other gods before me. You shall not make for yourself an idol.” Second Commandment: “You shall not use the name of the Lord your God in vain.” Third Commandment: “Remember to keep holy the Sabbath day” Fourth Commandment: “Honor your father and your mother.” F.A.M.I.L.Y Father I Love You and Mother, Fourth Commandment Children, obey your parents in the Lord for this is right. ‘Honor your father and mother’... ‘so that it may be well with you and you may live long on the earth.’ And Fathers, do not provoke your children in anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord. - Ephesians 6:1-4 Fourth Commandment HONOR your Father and Mother. v Honor and respect are ought to be given to both father and mother equally. v The 4th commandment deepens the importance of marriage and family. The church teaches us the nature of the family as a covenant relationship, domestic church, and a foundation for civil society. Fourth Commandment v COVENANT RELATIONSHIP: Ø the family is formed through the marriage of a man and a woman. Ø no matter how imperfect our families may be, it is where we experience belongingness, unity, God’s love, and fidelity; and freedom through forgiveness, compassion and understanding. Ø our family is the covenant where we truly belong and find our home. Fourth Commandment v DOMESTIC CHURCH: Ø the family is the “church in the home, the basic unit of Christian life, and the first school of discipleship.” Ø as a Christian family, we strive to reach out to all members with compassion, understanding, forgiveness, and joy. Ø we celebrate the gift of presence of family members and pray for one another. Fourth Commandment v FIRST and VITAL CELL OF SOCIETY: Ø the family contributes to the life, development, and progress of the nation and the world. Without family, there would be no society. Ø character excellence at home and in school bring stability and progress in the country. Ø the church teaches that “family constitutes an irreplaceable school in developing, guarding, and transmitting the social virtues, and values of respect, dialogue, generous service, justice, and love.” Fourth Commandment v the 4th commandment grounds children’s duty to honor and respect their parents. It demands authentic “filial respect for parents” from children and adults. It is different from “blind obedience” or “automatic, unquestioning submissiveness” to the parents. v it is a positive command of love for both parents and children. it demands that parents show care and respect for their children as persons with dignity. this extends to the teachers, employers, and leaders. Lesson 3.14 Love Leads to Respect for Life (Fifth Commandment) First Commandment: “I am the Lord your God, you shall have no other gods before me. You shall not make for yourself an idol.” Second Commandment: “You shall not use the name of the Lord your God in vain.” Third Commandment: “Remember to keep holy the Sabbath day” Fourth Commandment: “Honor your father and your mother.” Fifth Commandment: “You shall not kill.” Fifth Commandment “ Do not kill. ” - Deuteronomy 5:17 & Exodus 20:13 v Jesus is the good shepherd who laid down His life to save us from sin and to give us eternal life. Jesus came so that we “might have life, and have it to the full” (John 10:10) through His Passion, Death, and Resurrection, Christ has become for us “the Resurrection and the Life” (John 11:25) Fifth Commandment “ Do not kill. ” - Deuteronomy 5:17 & Exodus 20:13 v excessive anger, which is rooted in the heart, becomes a dark road to killing. The opposite road that leads to life is inner peace. v the GOLDEN RULE reminds us to treat the other person as an alter Christos. It is an “ethic of reciprocity” for it states, “In everything, do to others as you would have them do to you.” (Matt 7:12) v this commandment is violated through direct attacks on life like murder, abortion, euthanasia, and suicide. Activity: Write a prayer of thanksgiving for the gift of family. (especially, pray for your parents) Thank you :> Ms. Cristy Marquez
