Individuals can influence public policy and Interest groups come to mind Individuals forming together to amplify messages is called an interest group Any group with an interest advocating for political preferences Special interest groups advocate AGAINST things they don’t like Some examples: American Medical Association They benefit from there being few doctors because they would get paid less if there were more doctors There has been a rapid growth in the number of interest groups since the 1960’s More government programs equals more clients The first ammemdment protections make organizing very simple They are very easy to form legally Peak associations are large and most influential groups within the policy domain Membership interest groups (Intentional about joining) Economic private institutional interest groups There are also economic and private interest groups As opposed to public interest groups Private interest groups will argue that their private interests are public interest Unofficial Actors Why people join interest groups Economic well being or other personal benefit Convincing people to join Desire to belong or identify with a group TO find ways to be heard Interest groups usually lobby Lobbying: provide information Supporting candidates with money Mobilizing voters and Direct action Legal challenges and support Join and promote social movements Policy makers might care about different aspect of the interest groups Some interest groups have different levels of power based on Resources (money) Membership number Reasons for membership How much power they have And these groups’ resources have trade offs Additionally, political parties serve as interest groups These provide cues for voters and help elected officials create policy They can also breed conflict Another private actor (unofficial actor) is a think tank These are either private or as part of a university These groups provide information to public and policy makers and promote preferred policies Some are incredibly influential (CFR) and others aren’t Some are broad and some are not These can either be 501(c)(3) OR 501(c)(4) D All of these private actors are in the Solution sector of the policy battlefield They don’t know the problem yet but they have the solution All will call themselves non-partisen, but that doesn’t mean they don’t take sides It varies who is accepted into a think tank Many of them are organized as “barbells” People with graduate degrees on one side, people involved in public outreach are on the other Another private actor is the News media They are referred to as the watch dogs or the fourth branch of government Tgey are related to agenda setting There have been a changing media langscape overtime from a more general information dump to a more curated information dump As in advertising is the model now We have moved from mass media to targeted media, which results in more separation brought upon by the news media Interestingly, local media hurt most by losing advertising revenue They now have much smaller revenue base as their media is targeted rather than broad News media tells the public what to talk about Agenda setting Framing How is ____ covered and what news is prioritized Crime stories and death, accidents, tragedies are what sell Bad news is high priority for news News judgemen Transmitting cues from elites to public They can also inject elite views INTO the public and vice versa Basically: People have a limited capacity to observe what is happening in the world An average person will not have the same reach as the news media So the news media will have the power over the constitution Social media, as a gatekeeper, therefore, is incredibly powerful People tend to trust SOME news media, but not all of them Fox news for example, have had their ratings TANK after Tucker left, which si strange Now, the company is losing ratings with CNN Fox is an example of PERSONALITY driven news It seems that people only like Tucker Carlson, not Fox News This did not happen with Don Lemon It seems people like CNN and not necessariy Don Lemon How does this come together? A policy subsystem looks like an iron triangle Bureaucrats, Interest Groups, and Congress Within this triangle, you get specific news media attracted to each group Private actors can also usurp the policy process For example, Blackrock is the largest asset management company in the US. He has been pushing a policy called ESG This is the concept of stakeholder capitalism Rather than being focused on the people involved in a transaction Care about other people that might be involved in the policy Now, since companies want to stay in business with the biggest asset company in the world Companies like Walmart make new policies to align with Blackrocks new policy Blackrock doesn’t need a government to implement policy Sometimes a private actor can influence policy. What exactly are you doing here? Why do you keep failing? You got 2 failing grades (Most likely curved) on the exams. This has never happened before. You’re doing something wrong. What is different? You don’t take incremental daily study as seriously anymore. You have to practice these things and you don’t Before at least you completed the practice problems every time, though your scores were basically Bs You don’t even look at your notes. You don’t have any practice under your belt. You think that these classes are pointless They are But to become a doctor, you have to take them seriously Though you do not want to be a doctor, you still have to try your best This professor keeps saying that becoming a doctor is incredibly difficult on purpose The AMA would prefer there to be as few doctors as possible to maintain the pay they receive THIS IS A WARNING FROM GOD TO YOU. RIGHT AFTER THE MIDTERM. THIS IS WHY HE MADE YOU WAKE UP AT 4 LIKE YOU WANTED, BUT DIDN’T HELP YOU PASS THE TEST You think your efforts don’t amount to anything But less effort than what you used to put in is making the problem worse You have to accept that your level is not theirs. And you cant blame God for this. Some people are destined to be better than others at all things Its not fair but its not supposed to be You are too focused on your own projects If this doesn’t work, you wont have a way to pay of the debt you’ve accrued. You must put your more exciting ventures aside to save your academic standing from ruin. You cannot maintain both projects and College at the same time Systems Engineering: 1 Midterm Left Every grade must be an A Chemistry: 2 Midterms Left You must get an A on the next midterm Public Policy: 2 Midterms Left You must get an A on the next midterm There are 3 weeks until the next Systems Midterm There is less than a week until the Chemistry and Public Policy Midterms This is the only thing you can do to save your academic standing. Don’t think of getting A’s now. Think of recuperation. Things you can do differently: Keep up with the videos Practice questions Work with others Don’t work on any more projects Put Keeoku, UAgent, Elevator, Music, and others aside IMMEDIENTLY. You are no longer working on any of these projects Focus on College You must NOT pursue ANY leisurely activity Cut walking, videos, and phone time from your life IMMEDIENTLY Twitter, SoundCloud, Instagram are OFF LIMITS until the end of the term
