Back then, the definition of hospitality usually meant basic meal and some ale. These casual stays then evolved to become more than just a place to stay. Serving an increasingly-mobile class of merchants, nobles, scholars, and priests, the hospitality industry was born. LA SALANDRA | 2024-2025 12 Just a bit of history (2/2) In parallel with modern development in economic societies, especially urbanization, which is associated with the widespread specific division of labor in various industries, and increases in productivity and income over time, the business characteristics of the hospitality industry have evolved from serving a relatively small social group of upscale individuals with a few types of services to a large mass of workers. The composition of this industry has also expanded to include a wider range of services rather than just simply hotels. For example, visitors to hotels, theatres, cinemas, and parks of various forms can now choose from many different types of restaurants, as opposed to the food services that were traditionally offered. Since the mid-20th century, a broad range of hospitable services related to tourism and leisure have become major sub-sectors of the hospitality industry. LA SALANDRA | 2024-2025 13 CHARACTERISTICS OF HOSPITALITY IN RELATION TO LEISURE, TOURISM, AND NON-LEISURE ACTIVITIES LA SALANDRA | 2024-2025 THINK WIDE 15 A WIDE FRAMEWORK In terms of the characteristics of the hospitality industry and the wide variety of businesses that characterize the business practices involved, all are affected by the performances of the local, regional and world economies and in turn affect them as well. The hospitality industry mainly provides services to meet the desire for leisure activities, or coordinate the business demands of firms. Given that leisure activities are a non-necessity and largely influenced by changes and expected changes in income, and the demand of firms for related business services is influenced by the economic environment, related spending in the hospitality industry will therefore increase when the economic environment is good and the market atmosphere is positive, and the opposite also holds true.
