Lesson 5: Variables 1.Definition 2.Basic Types 3.Variable Relationship 4.Other Types of variable Pass the Pencil with a twist What is quantitative Reseach? What is quantitative Reseach? It is a process of collecting and analyzing numerical data. ( scattered diagram, diff. type of correlation -Pearson r) It can be use to find patterns and averages, make predictions, test causal relationship and generalize results to wider populations. Pass the Pencil with a twist What can you observe? What is Quantitative Reseach? It relies on the collection of quantitative data ( follows confirmatory scientific method focuses on hypothesis testing and theory testing sample is large and can be generalized to Characteristics of Quantitative Research? 1.Objective and not subjective. 2. Research questions are clearly defined. 3. Research instrument is clearly structured. 4.Numerical Presentation of data. 5.Large sample size. Characteristics of Quantitative Research? 6. Replicated but not duplicated. 7. Data can be used to predict future outcomes or forecasts. 8. Data can be used to verify existing facts and develop new concepts. Characteristics of Quantitative Research? 1.Objective and not subjective. Precision and accuracy of measurement and analysis is the target of the concepts. Intuition and guesses is not practice or used in developing conclusions or solutions to a problem. Characteristics of Quantitative Research? 2. Research questions are clearly defined. Familiarity to the topic of research have to be more focus. Research questions should be precise and clear for which objective answers are sought. Characteristics of Quantitative Research? 3. Research instrument is clearly Instrument structured. of the study should be well organized and plan and with different dimensions and scales. It is a structured research tool like questionnaires or checklist. Characteristics of Quantitative Research? 4. Numerical Presentation of data. Data are organized in the form of numbers and statistics. Form of tables, charts, graphs and figures to consolidate large number of data to show trends, relationship or differences among variables. Characteristics of Quantitative Research? 5. Large sample size. The greater the sample size the more reliable data analysis. To avoid biases in interpreting the results. It requires a normal population distribution curve. 20% of the Characteristics of Quantitative Research? 6. Replicate but not duplicate Reliable quantitative studies can be replicated or repeated but not duplicated to verify or confirm the correctness of the results in another setting. Validity of the findings may eliminate Characteristics of Quantitative Research? 7. Data can be used to predict future outcomes or forecasts. Through complex mathematical calculations and with the aid of computers and formulated scenarios can be predicting future results. Characteristics of Quantitative Research? 8. Data can be used to verify existing facts and develop new concepts. Can validate existing fact. Can be use to develop new ideas needed to make life more comfortable. Learning Objectives At the end of 50 minutes discussion the learners should be able to: determine importance of quantitative research across fields ; illustrates the importance of quantitative research across fields ;and Create a concept map of other fields/disciplines where you think quantitative research can be applied Importance of Research Across field. discover the unknown and improve underlying conditions is undeniable. quantitative research has paved the way to finding meaningful solutions to difficulties. can influence leaders’ and law-makers’ decisions for crafting and implementing Importance of Research Across field. Most inventions and innovations are products of quantitative studies. mankind will dwell in the darkness of ignorance if not for the people who conducted their research before reading about it from books or manuals Contributions of quantitative research to other fields and their example. 1.Social Sciences Show effects of intervention to group behavior Understand cultural or racial conflicts Human satisfaction and stressors Ex: The effects of pandemic on social behavior and economic stability Contributions of quantitative research to other fields and their example. 2. Natural and Physical Science Investigate the effectiveness of a product or treatment to illnesses Finding or enhancing alternative energy sources Advancement in material science Ex: Antidiabetic properties of common Contributions of quantitative research to other fields and their example. 3. Agriculture and FisheriesInvestigate Increase the yield of crops Prevent and cure crops and livestock diseases Ex: the effectiveness of organic and inorganic fertilizer to vegetable production Contributions of quantitative research to other fields and their example. 4. Sports Enhance athletic performance Ex: Diet and exercise techniques for different kinds of sports Contributions of quantitative research to other fields and their example. 4. Business Offer device marketing strategies Improve marketability Ex: Effectiveness of Facebook ads on sales. Contributions of quantitative research to other fields and their example. 5. Arts and Design how relationship between color and architectural space Maximize use of Multimedia and adaptation for recreation, business marketing and lifestyle changes. EX: The effects of music on learning and Contributions of quantitative research to other fields and their example. 6. Environmental Science Determine Cause and effects of climate change Ex: The environmental factors affecting natural calamities Activity 1. In a separate sheet, make a concept of other fields/disciplines where you think quantitative research can be applied. Minimum of 5 fields or discipline. Explain why quantitative research is important to these fields. Assignment Search online or from a book or publication one particular quantitative study for every field below and indicate its contribution to the development of knowledge to that field. 1. Education 2. Medicine 3. Sports 4. Food Industries Thank you for listening! Characteristics, strength, weakness and types of Quantitative Research. Learning Objectives At the end of 50 minutes discussion the learners should be able to: describes characteristics, strengths, weaknesses, and kinds of quantitative research; and Enumerate the strength and weakness of quantitative research Create a venn diagram showing the strength/advantages and weakness/disadvantage Strength of Quantitative Research 1. Quantitative research can be replicated or repeated. 2. Finding are generalizable to the population. 3. Numerical and quantifiable data can be used to predict outcomes. 4. Fast and easy data analysis using statistical software. 5. Fast and easy data gathering. 6. It is objective 7. Validity and reliability can be established. Weakness of Quantitative Research 1. It lacks the necessary data to explore a problem or concept in depth. 2. It does not provide comprehensive explanation of human experiences. 3. Some information can cannot described by numerical data such as feelings and beliefs. 4. The participants are limited to choose only from the given responses. 2 types of Quantitative Research 1. Non- Experimental Research – independent variable is not manipulated and there is no random assignment to group. Survey Research/ Descriptive Research- describe the characteristics of population without determining any relationship. Correlational – you investigate the relationship between your study variables. 2 types of Quantitative Research 2. Experimental Research –you systematically examine whether there is a cause and effect relationship. there is a treatment or intervention done Specific treatment to experimental group withholding from control group. Researcher test intervention Kinds of Quantitative Research 1. Descriptive design used to describe a particular phenomenon by observing it as it occurs in nature. goal of descriptive research is only to describe the person or object of the study. No experimental manipulation. Ex: “the determination of the different kinds of physical activities and how often high school students do it during Kinds of Quantitative Research 2. The correlational design identifies the relationship between variables. Data is collected by observation since it does not consider the cause and effect. Ex : The relationship between the amount of physical activity done and student academic achievement. Kinds of Quantitative Research 3. Ex post facto design- used to investigate a possible relationship between previous events and present conditions “Ex post facto” which means after the fact, looks at the possible causes of an already occurring phenomenon. Kinds of Quantitative Research 4. A quasi-experimental design - to establish the cause-and-effect relationship of variables. quasi-experimental has lesser validity due to the absence of random selection and assignment of subjects. Ex: The effects of unemployment on attitude towards following safety protocol Kinds of Quantitative Research 2. Experimental design - to establish the cause-and-effect relationship of variables. provides a more conclusive result because it uses random assignment of subjects and experimental manipulations. Ex:a Comparison of the effects of various blended learning to the reading comprehension of elementary pupils. Directions: On the space provided, write TRUE if the statement describes quantitative research and FALSE if it is incorrect. _______1. Quantitative data can be presented using tables and graphs. _______2. The results of quantitative research can be used to generalize and predict. _______3. Quantitative research is flexible so at any stage, the study may change. _______4. Quantitative data are more credible, reliable, and useful Directions: On the space provided, write TRUE if the statement describes quantitative research and FALSE if it is incorrect. _______6. Data are in the form of numbers and analyzed statistically _______7. Data analysis is an on-going process. It can be done at any stage of the process. _______8.
