GE ELEC PPT5 People and Earth Ecosystem AIR Is the invisible mixture of gases that surrounds Earth. Air contains important substances, such as oxygen and nitrogen, that most species need to survive. Sometimes, the word "atmosphere" is used instead of the word "air." Composition of Air More than 99% of air is made of three gases(78%) nitrogen, (21%)oxygen, and (1%)argon. Air contains other gases in very small quantities, including gaseous water, which is called water vapor. Air also contains solids and liquids. Properties of Air Air is a mixture of many gases, water vapors and dust particles. Air exerts pressure. Air has mass. Air occupies space. Air is colorless and odorless. Importance of air: Air is the most important component for the survival of life on Earth. We breathe in air. The oxygen present in air is required for respiration of living beings. Facts about air THE AVRAGE PERSON TAKES BETWEEN 17,280 AND 23,040 BREATHS A DAY. THE AIR IS APPROXIMATELY 78 PERCENT NITROGEN AND 21 PERCENT OXYGEN. THE ONLY PLACE WHERE THERE IS NO AIR IS IN SPACE! What is atmosphere at·mo·sphere ˈat-mə-ˌsfir. : the whole mass of air that surrounds the earth. : the gas surrounding a heavenly body (as a planet) The atmosphere of Mars is made up mostly of carbon dioxide. What is the importance of atmosphere? The atmosphere contains the air that we breathe; protects us from the harmful radiation of the Sun; helps to keep the planet's heat on the surface, and plays a very important role in the water cycle. How does atmosphere affect our daily life? The atmosphere protects life on earth by shielding it from incoming ultraviolet (UV) radiation, keeping the planet warm through insulation, and preventing extremes between day and night temperatures. The sun heats layers of the atmosphere causing it to convert driving air movement and weather patterns around the world. How can we protect the atmosphere? We can take public transportation, ride a bike, or walk whenever possible. This will reduce the amount of pollutants emitted into the air. Use cleaner fuels and more fuel-efficient products. Encourage your parents and other grown-ups to use cleaner fuels in their car. How does atmosphere help in climate control? The atmosphere is a protective layer that safeguards the earth from the harsh conditions of the solar system. The air is a poor conductor of heat. During the day, it prevents a sudden increase in the temperature of the earth and prevents the heat to escape to outer space during the night. What is the most important part of the atmosphere? Troposphere is considered as the most important layer of atmosphere. It is the lower most layer of the Atmosphere. Its average height is 13 km. Activity 5: Group work 1. Each group will make a power point presentation about what is atmospheric pressure all about site examples and videos
