TH SCIENC AR E E PREPARED BY: MS. STEFFANY Q. PERMEJO ACTIVITY: ANALYZING THE TERRARIUM Guide Questions: 1. What are the components of the terrarium? 2. Give the functions of each component in the terrarium that enable life to sustain it. 3. How can you compare the terrarium to an Earth system? TOPIC: EARTH AND ITS SUBSYSTEMS ACTIVITY: DISCUSSION & SHARING OBJECTIVES Explains that the Earth consists of four subsystems, across whose boundaries matter and energy flow. Recognizes the four subsystems of the Earth where matter and energy flow across its boundaries. Create a digital poster of your own habitable planet showing the four subsystems. TOPIC: EARTH AND ITS SUBSYSTEMS ACTIVITY: DISCUSSION & SHARING EARTH AND IT’S SUBSYSTEMS TOPIC: EARTH AND ITS SUBSYSTEMS ACTIVITY: DISCUSSION & SHARING EARTH'S SUBSYSTEMS AND THE FLOW OF MATTER AND ENERGY Earth is a complex system of interrelating physical, chemical, and biological processes. It is a system in which sets of interconnected components are interacting to form a unified whole. Earth is comprised of four major smaller systems known as subsystems. These are the atmosphere, geosphere, hydrosphere and biosphere. TOPIC: EARTH AND ITS SUBSYSTEMS ACTIVITY: DISCUSSION & SHARING THE ATMOSPHERE Atmosphere serve as the blanket of Earth. Its name rooted from the Greek word "atmos" - gas and "sphaira" - globe or ball. Atmosphere is the mixture of gases (nitrogen, oxygen, argon, carbon dioxide and water vapor) that surround the planet earth. TOPIC: EARTH AND ITS SUBSYSTEMS ACTIVITY: DISCUSSION & SHARING COMPOSITION OF AIR Nitrogen and oxygen account for 99 percent of the gases in air. Argon, carbon dioxide, helium, neon and other gases make up the remaining 1%. TOPIC: EARTH AND ITS SUBSYSTEMS ACTIVITY: DISCUSSION & SHARING LAYERS OF THE ATMOSPHERE Exosphere The final layer stretches into space and houses satellites. Thermosphere This is the hottest layer because it absorbs the sun's radiation. Auroras occur in this layer. Mesosphere The coldest layer which protects us from meteors because they burn up in this layer. Stratosphere The ozone is found in this layer protecting us from UV rays Troposphere The layer in which we live and weather occurs. TROPOSPHERE It is the layer where weather occurs, and it is where we live and breathe. Hot air balloons and airplanes fly within the troposphere because it provides the necessary conditions for safe and efficient air travel. TOPIC: EARTH AND ITS SUBSYSTEMS ACTIVITY: DISCUSSION & SHARING er ay STRATOSPHERE eL Ozon The stratosphere is also home r to the ozone layer, which ye shields the Earth from harmful La UV radiation. ne Radiosondes can collect data zo and travel up to the lower part O of the stratosphere. yer a L ne zo O TOPIC: EARTH AND ITS SUBSYSTEMS ACTIVITY: DISCUSSION & SHARING MESOSPHERE The mesosphere is characterized by thin air and low atmospheric pressure. It is also the layer where meteors burn up upon entry into the Earth's atmosphere, creating the visual phenomenon known as shooting stars. TOPIC: EARTH AND ITS SUBSYSTEMS ACTIVITY: DISCUSSION & SHARING THERMOSPHERE The thermosphere is primarily composed of individual gas molecules, such as oxygen and nitrogen, rather than molecular combinations. The thermosphere is also where the auroras, such as the Northern Lights and Southern Lights, occur. TOPIC: EARTH AND ITS SUBSYSTEMS ACTIVITY: DISCUSSION & SHARING EXOSPHERE The exosphere is where satellites and other human- made objects in Earth's orbit are found. Satellites are strategically placed in orbit within the exosphere to perform their various functions. TOPIC: EARTH AND ITS SUBSYSTEMS ACTIVITY: DISCUSSION & SHARING THE HYDROSPHERE Hydrosphere is the totality of Earth’s water, including the permanently frozen called the “cryosphere”. Approximately 71 percent of Earth's surface is covered in water. Of all of that water, only about three percent is freshwater. An even smaller amount can be used as drinking water. TOPIC: EARTH AND ITS SUBSYSTEMS ACTIVITY: DISCUSSION & SHARING THE HYDROSPHERE From the deepest oceans to the tiniest droplets in clouds, the hydrosphere supports life as we know it. The hydrosphere influences climate, shapes landscapes, and supports our planet’s ecology. COMPOSITION OF HYDROSPHERE TOPIC: EARTH AND ITS SUBSYSTEMS ACTIVITY: DISCUSSION & SHARING EXAMPLES OF HYDROSPHERE Glaciers Sea Streams TOPIC: EARTH AND ITS SUBSYSTEMS ACTIVITY: DISCUSSION & SHARING THE GEOSPHERE The geosphere refers to the solid Earth. It is the earth itself: the rocks, minerals, and landforms of the surface and interior. These layers provide plants with the nutrients needed to grow and contain the different rocks from the rock cycle. TOPIC: EARTH AND ITS SUBSYSTEMS ACTIVITY: DISCUSSION & SHARING LAYERS OF THE GEOSPHERE Geosphere is thus essential because it provides all living organisms with natural resources and places to live, grow, and survive. Without the geosphere, there will be only water on Earth. TOPIC: EARTH AND ITS SUBSYSTEMS ACTIVITY: DISCUSSION & SHARING EXAMPLES OF GEOSPHERE Volcano Mountain Desert TOPIC: EARTH AND ITS SUBSYSTEMS ACTIVITY: DISCUSSION & SHARING THE BIOSPHERE The biosphere contains the entirety of the Earth’s living things (plants and animals). It is sometimes refers to as the “zone of life”. It is a zone where the interaction between the the different subsystems is most dynamic. TOPIC: EARTH AND ITS SUBSYSTEMS ACTIVITY: DISCUSSION & SHARING MAIN COMPONENTS OF BIOSPHERE The biosphere is crucial for sustaining life, regulating the Earth's climate, cycling nutrients, and providing essential ecosystem services. Its health and integrity are vital for the continued survival and well-being of all species, including humans. TOPIC: EARTH AND ITS SUBSYSTEMS ACTIVITY: DISCUSSION & SHARING EXAMPLES OF BIOSPHERE FOREST RIVER GRASSLAND TOPIC: EARTH AND ITS SUBSYSTEMS ACTIVITY: DISCUSSION & SHARING SPHERE INTERACTION Matter and energy flows and cycle between the four subsystems to sustain and make life on earth possible. Both of it can flow across the boundaries between each subsystem. The processes that move matter and energy from one sphere to another is called SPHERE INTERACTIONS. TOPIC: EARTH AND ITS SUBSYSTEMS ACTIVITY: DISCUSSION & SHARING SHORT QUIZ TOPIC: EARTH AND ITS SUBSYSTEMS ACTIVITY: DISCUSSION & SHARING QUESTION #1 The atmosphere serves as an envelop which protects the earth.
