Solid State Lighting - is a type of lighting that utilizes light-emitting diodes (LEDs). - The term solid state refers to the fact that light in this type of lamp is emitted from a solid object, which is a block of semiconductor, rather than from a vacuum or gas tube as is the case in traditional incandescent and fluorescent lamps. - Unlike traditional lighting however, SSL creates visible light with reduced heat generation. #### 5.7. Luminaires - A complete lighting unit consisting of a lamp or lamps together with the housing designed to distribute the light, position and protect the lamps, and connect the lamps to the power supply. - It is also called a lighting fixture. #### 5.7.1. Reflector - is a surface for reflecting light, heat, or esp, the device on a luminaire having such a surface for controlling the distribution of light emitted by a lamp. #### 5.7.2. Lens - is a piece of transparent material as glass or plastic, having two opposite surfaces either or both of which are curved used in luminaires to focus, disperse, or collimate the emitted light. - Is designed to control the light being emitted, and direct it into a given beam pattern. - Since it is always transparent, they are made of good quality material that will not discolor or distort over a period of time. #### 5.7.3. Diffuser - Any of a variety of translucent materials for filtering glare of a light source and distributing the light over an extended area. - Its purpose is to create a lit environment with minimal shadows, and to spread illumination far and wide. - It is commonly seen in the home in hotel and decorative fixtures. #### 5.7.4. Louver - A grid type of optical assembly used to control light distribution from a fixture. - It can range from a small-cell plastic to the large-cell anodized aluminum louvres used in parabolic fluorescent fixtures. #### 5.8. Families of Light Fixtures #### 5.8.1. Suspended Ceiling Lights - The most common type of light fixture offering the greatest variety of designs. - The light distributed can be any method depending on the shade you choose and the length of cord to which the bulb hangs. - Although the hanging fixture provides abundant general light, it tends to flatten shadows and look obtrusive when used as the sole light source. ##### i. Chandelier - a decorative lighting usually having branched supports for a number of lamps. ##### ii. Droplight - a lighting fixture suspended by a flexible cord by which it can be raised or lowered. ##### iii. Pendant - like a droplight, but is fixed and is suspended by a cord, wire, or chains.
