Persuasive Techniques: Rhetorical Devices (appeal to the reader with style) 5. Rhetorical Devices. There are several of these devices that help present arguments more appealingly and convincingly. They add elements of style to your writing which make your writing varied and interesting to read. a) Analogy. Using a comparison between two similar things to make a point clearer. For example: Working out again after a period of inactivity is similar to riding a bike: once you get back into it, it all comes back to you and your muscles remember the exercises. b) Allusion. Referencing a famous event, literary work or person. For example: Referencing Shakespeare or one of his works as an example of literary greatness. c) Anaphora. Repeats a word or phrase in successive phrases. For example: "If you prick us, do we not bleed? If you tickle us, do we not laugh?” (Shakespeare, Merchant of Venice) d) Parallelism: a string of clauses that are balanced in grammatical structure or relevance. For example: The key to good health lies in a balanced diet, an exercise regiment, and a good night’s rest. e) Antithesis: contrasting or opposing ideas presented in parallel structure. For example: Macbeth was a brave and strong leader; however, Macbeth was also a conniving and traitorous kinsman. f) Chiasmus: words, phrases or concepts are repeated, but in reverse order. For example: Christmas is a season of giving and joy, enjoyed by those that are joyful and giving.
