Maybe it was something lofty like an astronaut or a rocket scientist. Perhaps you were considering the teaching profession, nursing, or entering the military. Whatever it was, you had some idea of what you wanted to be when you grew up, but possibly not a full understanding of what it would take to get you there. Or, it could be that you're just exploring the different career options available to you, and hoping for a better grasp of the duties and responsibilities that a particular career brings. You need a career awareness primer to help you develop a complete understanding of your options and paths leading to a happy and successful career. Career awareness is an understanding of the various possibilities for long-term employment and the knowledge necessary to begin work in a career field and progress in that job. While you may be able to name a dozen or more possible career paths for yourself or a friend, there are thousands of jobs available to a willing workforce. The great thing about developing career awareness is that you are introduced to a variety of exciting career options in various industries that may be of interest to you, where you can excel and progress into a lifelong and rewarding job. Why do we need have career? t is important to come up with your career planning as it gives you the much needed direction and makes it clear there where you see yourself in future. It makes you aware of your strength and weaknesses and the skills and knowledge that are required to achieve your goals in future. Career is a very important thing in one's life. Whatever career path you choose to follow; it will impact your life greatly. Your career will define your status in a society in addition to your lifestyle. In other words, your career will determine your social circle and relationship How to Choose your Career? You must consider a number of factors before deciding on your career. Each factor plays a significant role in your choice. First, assess yourself thoroughly. You must understand your area of interest to choose a career. For instance, someone who dances well can surely become a doctor, but his interest will always be in dance. Thus, ensure that you have the caliber to perform well in the field you choose. This will come from your area of interest itself. When we think about career choice, several things immediately come to mind – job description, training and education required, career outlook, and salary – but there are a number of other factors that may influence your decisions. What Factors Influence a Career Choice? There are a lot of theories to consider in the relatively new field of career development. As you read through the factors below, you'll see that many of the related theories address some of the same issues. No one theory explains everything, so it's good to consider these factors from multiple perspectives. Childhood Fantasies. What do you want to be when you grow-up? You may remember this question from your childhood, and it may have helped shape how you thought about careers then, as well as later in life. Career counseling theories are expanding as programs related to career choice are developed for all ages, including the very young Culture – Racial and ethnic background, as well as the culture of an individual's regional area, local community, and extended family, may impact career decisions. Our culture often shapes our values and expectations as they relate to many parts of our lives, including jobs and careers. Gender. Both men and women have experienced career-related stereotypes. Gender is a factor included in multiple career development theories and approaches including, social learning and multicultural career counseling. How we view ourselves as individuals may influence both the opportunities and barriers we perceive as we make career decisions. Studies of gender and career development are ongoing as roles of men and women in the workforce, and in higher education, evolve. Personality Type. Understanding your Personality Type can assist your career development in a number of ways. 1) It can help you select a career field that is a good fit for your personality make-up. 2) It can increase your awareness of your learning style so you can better benefit from career related education. 3) Understanding your personality preferences can help you better manage Job Challenges that inevitably rise their ugly heads during the course of our career. 4) Knowing your Personality Type, and especially knowing the specific details of your individual type can provide, will aid you in a job search, both in marketing yourself and in evaluating opportunities that arise. Skills, Abilities, & Talents. Considering your skills, abilities and talents and how they may fit a particular occupation comes out of one of the earliest career development fields,. These theories recommend creating occupational profiles for specific jobs as well as identifying individual differences, matching individuals to occupations based on these differences. You can identify activities you enjoy and those in which you have a level of competency though a formal assessment.
