(aside from being half-crazy) **Why JTR** - I hated what I was doing - I wanted to provide something of value to seniors - Demographic business case - Most services offered into LTC were "sitters" - There was a gap to be filled, and an opportunity to do something better **What could a TR business look like?** - What could it do? - Where could it go? - Who could it help? - What gaps could it fill? - What problems could it solve? - Need + Scarcity of Solutions = An opportunity (with no good reason why) **What is JTR** - Fee for service agency - Serves mostly geriatric, developmental delay, and mental health populations - Operates in care settings or community - Has served virtually all populations - Offers exclusively 1:1 TR service - Service available in-person, by phone or virtually **What is JTR concl.** - Home-based, for all staff -- no office - Started with essentially a laptop and cell - Has stayed basically the same, not much "brick and mortar" - Totally paperless since 2011, everything runs on our proprietary app called RecTracker **What might some challenges be?** - Challenges related to being a TR business - General challenges that businesses face **JTR's 4 Primary Challenges** 1. Asking people to pay for health care 2. Almost complete lack of public awareness of TR 3. Securing consistent referrals 4. Recruiting **It's a healthcare business** - Fee for service - Need to convince people of your value before they pay for you - They can stop whenever they want **Competition** - What are families and referral sources comparing your service to? - They have choices **Marketing** - Greatest challenge is lack of awareness of TR, everywhere - People need to understand what they are being asked to pay for - No magic bullet -- whatever you do has to be done consistently and well - Marketing is not "One and Done" **We need clients...** - Clients don't last forever, they need to be replaced - What is the client turnover rate? How quickly do you need new ones? - Can you control for this turnover rate? **We need staff...** - How to attract and keep them? - How to make the jobs appealing - Clients don't last forever -- staff hours fluctuate - Higher wages / benefits = higher billing rate = risk of being too expensive **Difficulty of the launch** - Launched 1:1 TR in July 2003 - First client came in September 2003 - Took a horrible part-time job for 2004 and 2005 - Was a long time before I could pay myself any salary at all **Difficulty of the launch cont'd** - Financial supports: Small business loans: the bank of family - Took until Oct 2006 to pay off my personal credit line; my wife had to shoulder most of the financial burden while I built the business. **Early days** - Scrambling to get known, trusted - Balancing the tasks of owner **Difficulty of the launch concl.** - "Sort of funny in retrospect" facts: - **times I was at such a loss as to what to do next to make things work that I took a bag of Decadent cookies and went to bed: 2** - **of times I said no to a personal purchase: approx 43,962** - **times I seriously thought about chucking it in: 0** **Reasons to keep at it...** - \"Your services were so important to my Mother (as well as to me). Once again she started to believe that she was a capable person, and not just a patient in a long-term care facility. The recreation therapist was able to draw out the creative and humorous person that had been hidden inside.
