Tooth Morphology 3 Permanent Dentition Teamwork Improving Kindness Safety Student name: This handbook is to be used in conjunction with your sessions on Permanent Dentitions. 1 For each tooth (see templates below):  Complete the Chronology table  List 3-5 main identifying features  List the number of cusps (If any), roots and pulp horns  Record the dental notation using Palmer and FDI (both right & left)  Describe any potential variations You may use the following resources to help to access the information required. Website: University of Leeds, The Tooth Morphology Lab dentapps.leeds.ac.uk/vlab/morphology/index.htm# (be aware to click on ‘Permanent’ then onto each individual tooth on the model. (Note: All of the pictures are shown with the crown up, so for the maxillary teeth ensure to switch this round by clicking on ‘Crown down’. Book: Dental Morphology, An illustrated guide, Geoffrey C van Beek You may add pictures to your document and anything else which you feel will help your learning of this subject. I have completed the first tooth as an example. Maxillary (upper) teeth 2 Maxillary central permanent incisor Chronology Initial calcification 3-4 months after birth Crown completion 4-5 years Eruption 7-8 years Root completion 10 years Notation: Palmer= UR1, UL1 FDI= 11, 21 Identifying features  Rounded disto-incisal angle, sharp mesio-incisal angle  Large crown in proportion to the root. Widest anterior tooth- smooth convex surface labially  Defined marginal ridges on palatal aspect with pronounced cingulum  Crown inclined palatally  Tapered single root - inclined slightly distally Number of cusps: 0 Number of pulp horns: 2 (mesial & distal) Number of roots: 1 Variations: malformed macrodent; enlarged marginal ridges palatally- gives shovel-like appearance- may be found more commonly in certain ethnicities; cingulum may be elongated towards incisive edge Maxillary lateral permanent incisor Chronology Initial calcification Crown completion Eruption Root completion Notation: Palmer= FDI= Identifying features  Number of cusps: 0 Number of pulp horns: Number of roots: Variations: Maxillary permanent canine 3 Chronology Initial calcification Crown completion Eruption 11-12 years Root completion Notation: Palmer= FDI= Identifying features  Number of cusps: Number of pulp horns: Number of roots: Variations: Maxillary first premolar Chronology Initial calcification Crown completion Eruption Root completion Notation: Palmer= FDI= 14/24 Identifying features  Number of cusps: Number of pulp horns: Number of roots: Variations: Maxillary second premolar Chronology Initial calcification Crown completion Eruption Root completion Notation: Palmer= UR5/UL5 FDI= Identifying features  Number of cusps: Number of pulp horns: Number of roots: 4 Variations: Maxillary first permanent molar Chronology Initial calcification Crown completion Eruption Root completion Notation: Palmer= FDI= Identifying features  Cusp of ? present on mesio-palatal aspect  Very similar to ? primary molar morphology Number of cusps: 4 Number of pulp horns: Number of roots: Variations: Maxillary second permanent molar Chronology Initial calcification Crown completion Eruption Root completion 14-16 years Notation: Palmer= FDI= Identifying features  Number of cusps: Number of pulp horns: Number of roots: 3 Variations: Mandibular (lower) teeth Mandibular permanent central incisor 5 Chronology Initial calcification Crown completion Eruption Root completion Notation: Palmer= FDI= Identifying features  Number of cusps: Number of pulp horns: Number of roots: Variations: Mandibular lateral permanent incisor Chronology Initial calcification Crown completion Eruption Root completion Notation: Palmer= FDI= Identifying features  Number of cusps: Number of pulp horns: Number of roots: Variations: Mandibular primary canine Chronology Initial calcification Crown completion Eruption Root completion Notation: Palmer= FDI= Identifying features  Number of cusps: Number of pulp horns: Number of roots: 6 Variations: Mandibular First Premolar Chronology Initial calcification Crown completion Eruption Root completion Notation: Palmer= FDI= Identifying features  Number of cusps: Number of pulp horns: Number of roots: Variations: Mandibular second premolar Chronology Initial calcification Crown completion Eruption Root completion Notation: Palmer= FDI= Identifying features  Number of cusps: Number of pulp horns: Number of roots: Variations: Mandibular first primary molar Chronology Initial calcification Crown completion Eruption Root completion Notation: Palmer=LR6/LL6 FDI= 36/46 Identifying features 7  Number of cusps: Number of pulp horns: Number of roots: Variations: Mandibular second primary molar Chronology Initial calcification Crown completion Eruption Root completion Notation: Palmer= FDI= Identifying features  Number of cusps: Number of pulp horns: Number of roots: Variations: 8
