HUBS1416 – PASS Topic 1 - Digestion and Metabolism Welcome to PASS! This is a relaxed, safe, mutual study environment. Feel free to bring lunch, snacks, coffee - whatever you need. 1 hour of PASS can be as productive as 3 hours of individual study time. There are no silly questions. Feel free to email me if you have questions - [email protected] Now let’s take a tour of the digestive system… The Mouth, Oesophagus and Swallowing Discuss the mechanical digestion processes which take place in the mouth. How is this different from chemical digestion? What are the key components of saliva which begin the chemical digestion process? What is a bolus? What is peristalsis? How is this different from segmentation? 1 The Stomach What is the function of the components of gastric juice? ○ Hydrochloric acid: ○ Mucus: ○ Pepsinogen: ○ Gastric lipase: ○ Intrinsic Factor (IF): Which factors stimulate and inhibit the stomach? The Small Intestines What are the regions of the small intestine? What are their functions? Which accessory organs does the small intestine require secretions from? What are the main functions of these organs? 2 What is in pancreatic juice? What is in bile? After studying the following image (taken from lecture slides), practice describing these 7 steps to someone next to you. Try to take note of what triggers CCK and secretin, and what their separate functions are. 3 Describe the structure of the small intestines. How does this structure maximise surface area, and what is the purpose of this? Absorbed nutrients are carried from the small intestine straight to the liver via the ___? The Liver List some key functions of the liver in relation to digestion. Large Intestines What is the primary function of the large intestines? QUICK SUMMARY SO FAR (From the lecture slides) Would you feel confident explaining the below information to a friend who asked a question? Practice! 4 Metabolism, fate of nutrients, control of feeding & satiety What is metabolism? What are the two main types of metabolic reactions, and how do they differ? Which nutrient provides the most energy per gram? How are the following nutrients utilised: ○ Amino acids? ○ Lipids? ○ Glucose? What regulates our intake of food? List some key hormones mentioned in the lectures. Some extra study tips: Always refer to the learning objectives! Check your understanding of each point. Practice teaching the concepts to someone else to check your own understanding. Make use of the practice questions/quizzes on canvas. If you get a question wrong, figure out WHY.
