Organization and Management Week 1 Objectives: The learners must be able to discuss the meaning and functions of management (ABM_AOM11- Ia-b-1) The learners must be able to explain the types and theories of management (ABM_AOM11- Ia-b- 2) Organization and Management Week 1 MANAGEMENT 3 ELEMENTS OF DEFINITION PROCESS- represents ongoing functions or primary activities engaged in by managers EFFICIENCY- getting the most output from the least amount of inputs. -”doing things right” - concerned with means - achieving the objectives in time MANAGEMENT 3 ELEMENTS OF DEFINITION EFFECTIVENESS- completing activities so that organizational goals are attained - “doing the right things” - concerned with ends - achieving the objectives on time Let’s see! FUNCTIONS OF MANAGEMENT Management analysis is done by breaking it down into five major managerial duties: thus making managerial duties understandable. POSDICON Planning, Organizing, Staffing, Directing, and Controlling FUNCTIONS OF MANAGEMENT PLANNING It is the basic function of management. It involves determining the organization’s goal or performance objectives, defining strategic actions that must be done to accomplish them, and developing coordination and integration activities Planning is a managerial function necessary to ensure proper utilization of human and non- human resources to achieve outputs that will meet the needs of external users. FUNCTIONS OF MANAGEMENT ORGANIZING Refers to the process of putting together physical, financial and human resources for the achievement of organizational goals Organizing as a process involves: ►Assignment of duties and accountabilities ►Classification of grouping of activities ►Coordinating authority and responsibility relationships ►Delegation od authority and creation of responsibility FUNCTIONS OF MANAGEMENT STAFFING Putting the right person for the job is the main purpose of staffing. According to Koontz and the O’Donnell, “Managerial functions of staffing involves manning the organization structure through proper and effective selection, appraisal and development of personnel to fill the roles designed in the structure” FUNCTIONS OF MANAGEMENT STAFFING Staffing involves: Manpower planning (estimating man power in terms of searching, choosing the person, and giving the right place) ►Recruitment, selection, and placement ►Remuneration ►Performance appraisal ►Promotions and transfers ►Training ang development FUNCTIONS OF MANAGEMENT DIRECTING Is concerned with the organizational methods to work efficiently for the achievement of organizational purposes. Elements: ►Communication ►Leadership ►Motivation ►Supervision FUNCTIONS OF MANAGEMENT CONTROLLING Involves evaluating and, if necessary, correcting the performance of the individuals or work groups or team to ensure that they are all working toward the set goals. Steps: ►Establishment of standard performance ►Measurement of actual performance ►Comparison of actual performance with the standards ►Corrective Action
