Module 3: Servant Leadership What is Servant Leadership? Defining Servant Leadership “The servant-leader is servant first...It begins with the natural feeling that one wants to serve.” —Robert K. Greenleaf Servant leadership is a leadership style in which the leader prioritizes subordinates, or community’s needs, development, and well-being. In other words, the leaders adopt a serve-first mindset, putting the welfare of their employees ahead of their own. Rather than followers working to serve the leader, the leader serves the needs of the followers. Servant leadership entails serving others and being available to them when they need assistance and help. Robert Greenleaf came up with the phrase “Servant Leadership” in his — 1970 essay, “The Servant as Leader” Since Greenleaf’s definition of Servant Leadership, numerous researchers have developed scales and dimensions, to distinguish between levels of Servant Leadership practices and to evaluate Servant Leadership behaviors. Here are a few other definitions of servant leadership: "Servant Leadership is a non-traditional leadership philosophy embedded in a set of behaviors and practices that place primary emphasis on the well-being of those being served" -Center for Servant Leadership "Servant leadership is a leadership style and philosophy whereby an individual interacts with others–either in a management or fellow employee capacity–to achieve authority rather than power. The system embodies a decentralized organizational structure" -Will Kenton Servant Leadership Differentiated 1. Autocratic Leadership Autocratic leadership is a leadership style that emphasizes individual control over all decisions with little input from subordinates. Autocratic leaders typically base their decisions according to their ideas and judgments, and rarely accept advice from their members or followers. Autocratic leadership entails total, authoritarian control of an organization. 2. Transactional Leadership Transactional leadership is a management style that prioritizes supervision, organization, and team performance. It emphasizes rule compliance to complete specific tasks and uses rewards and punishments to motivate subordinates and achieve optimal job performance. (quota) 3. Bureaucratic leadership Bureaucratic leadership is a hierarchical management system with fixed official functions or duties. In this leadership style, employees are expected to abide by the rules established by their superiors. It is founded on an unmistakable chain of command, strict regulations, and subordinate obedience. (specific works) Please take a five-minute break.
