MLA FORMAT This lesson will help you write the Paragraph AND prepare you for our Evaluation on Monday. For example, the finished product must: Be double spaced; Use 1” margins on all sides of your paper; Use 12 point font and Times New Roman; Include numbered pages with your last name on the top right-hand corner. FIRST PAGE STRUCTURE Your first page should include: Your name, your teacher’s name, the course code, and the date on the upper left-hand corner; An interesting title that’s centered; A double space between the title and the first line of the text. WHAT IS FORMAL STYLE? Formal writing refers to the use of: Present tense & active voice; Third Person perspective: Present your work “objectively” and in a rational way. Do NOT use any personal pronouns [I, me, my, you, etc.]. Use academic language, but not excessively. Do NOT use text-speak or slang terms. https://www.grammarly.com/blog/types-of-writing/ DEVELOPING THE THESIS A full essay will include a formal thesis, which explains how a topic is being explored/proven. This will become more important as we move into Essay Writing. A thesis statement will appear at the end of an intro to set up the content that appears in your body paragraphs. REMEMBER: the thesis is usually a single sentence, so keep it brief and to-the-point. PROPER CITATION [PART 1] Citations tell a reader when evidence is referenced from a different place and where that evidence came from. For this class, we’ll be using the MLA format in two ways: In-Text Citations: when evidence appears within the text; Works Cited: a list of references that is organized in alphabetical order. https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/research_and_citation/mla_style /mla_overview_and_workshop.html PROPER CITATION [PART 2] In-Text Citations appear at the end of quoted material and include the authors Last Name and the Page Number in rounded brackets. For example: the story is concerned with fate – characterized by Dumbeldore’s motto that “we can’t choose our fate, but we can choose others” (Rowling, 150). Each in-text citation is meant to represent a condensed version of the reference in your Works Cited. https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/research_and_citation/mla_style /mla_overview_and_workshop.html CITATION TOOLS “Nest” a quote when the reference is longer than three lines: Introduce the quotation with a colon; Begin the quote on a new line and indent the text ten spaces from the left margin. Do not use quotation marks. Use square brackets to change the original wording of the quotation or to add words for fluency/clarity. Use ellipses [three dots …] to omit a portion of the original quotation. PROPER CITATION [PART 3] Works Cited is a separate page for organizing your references. Every unique citation in your essay will appear on this page in a format that’s specific to the resource: Books – Last Name, First Name, Title. City: Publishing Company, Year. Rowling, J.K., Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince. London: Pottermore, 2005 Online Articles – Last Name, First Name. “Name of Article.” Name of Website, URL. Access Date. Lundman, Susan. “How to Make Vegetarian Chili.” eHow, www.ehow.com/how_10727_make-vegetarian-chili.html Accessed 6 July 2015. https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/research_and_citation/mla_style /mla_overview_and_workshop.html
