# Learn About Internet ## Chapter Surf * What is Internet * Uses of Internet * Internet terms * Opening a browser * Opening a website * Searching information in * Google Chrome When two or more computers are connected together, it is called a computer network. These computers can be connected through cables or telephone lines or through any wireless medium. ## WHAT IS INTERNET Internet is a global network of interconnected computers which are linked to share information. **Internet means Interconnected Network.** Internet is a huge network of computers connected all over the world. It provides connectivity to billions of computers. --- ## USES OF INTERNET Internet has made our life easy. We can do many things by using Internet. * We can play games. * We can download movies, songs, games, files etc * We can send or receive messages anywhere across the world. Messages sent through computers are called emails. * We can book tickets of a movie, a train or a flight. * We can get the latest news about the world. * We can get information on any topic at any time. * We can chat with others using text messages or voice messages or video messages. * We can purchase items from anywhere across the world and pay bills from home. This is called online shopping. --- ## INTERNET TERMS ### Website A website is a collection of related web pages that provides information about many things. A website is like a book that contains many web pages. Each website has a unique address known as its web address. ### Web Page A web page is a page of a website. Each page may contain text, graphics, audios, videos etc ### Home Page Every website has a main page which appears when we open the website. This page is called the home page. ### Hyperlink A web page also contains hyperlinks. When we move the mouse pointer over a hyperlink, it changes its shape to a hand (). When we click on hyperlink, it leads us to some other part of the website. ### World Wide Web (WWW) World Wide Web (WWW) is the largest collection of information on the Internet. It contains billions of websites. Thus, WWW is like a library that contains billions of books. ### Search Engine Search engine is specially programmed website that search information for us according to the terms we specify. The most popular search engine is Google. ### Internet Service Provider (ISP) It is a company which provides us connectivity to the Internet. For this, the company charges a fee as per our usage. Some of the ISPs are Airtel, Vodafone Idea, BSNL, Jio and MTNL. ### Browser It is a software needed to open and view web pages. The most popular web browsers are Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox. The most important use of Internet is to search information on a topic. Let us now learn how to use Internet. --- ## OPENING A BROWSER The information on Internet is divided into websites and web pages. Looking through the content of the website displayed in a browser is called browsing or surfing. After connecting to the Internet, we need a browser to open a website. Let us learn how to open Google Chrome. ### Starting Google Chrome: 1. Click on the **Start** button. 2. Scroll the mouse to search **Google Chrome** and click on it. ## Parts of Google Chrome Window The main parts of Google Chrome window are: * **Address Bar**: The Address Bar is used to type the address of a website we need to visit. * **Search Box**: The Search box is used to search about any topic. * **Refresh Button**: This button is used to start reloading a web page again. * **Back Button**: This button is used to go back to the previous page which was opened just before the current web page. * **Forward Button**: This button is used to go forward one web page. It can be used only if you have used the Back button at least once. * **Tab**: Google Chrome lets you open different web pages in the same browser window. Each web page opens in a separate tab. The tabs for different web pages are present at the top of the browser window. Each tab has Close tab button at the right edge to close the tab. The New tab button is used to open a new tab to view a new web page. ## OPENING A WEBSITE Type the address of the website (you want to open) in the **Address Bar** of the browser and press the **Enter** key. --- ## SEARCHING INFORMATION IN GOOGLE CHROME The primary use of Internet is to search for information on any topic. The Search box or Address bar is used to search about any topic. 1. Click in the Search box or Address bar and type the topic you want to search for. 2. Press the **Enter** key: The browser displays the information on the specified topic.
