Part 3: defining Geography how does Geography shape us? why is Geography important? 2 What is Geography? (And what isn’t it!) Geography isn’t about necessarily about memorizing arcane information. 3 What is Geography? (And what isn’t it!) It is the study of spatial aspects of human existence. 4 What is Geography? (And what isn’t it!) Geography has more to do with asking important questions and solving challenging problems than it does with memorization of isolated facts. 5 Why is the study of Geography important? By studying geography, we gain a deeper understanding of the world around us and our place within it. 6 Why is the study of Geography important? Spatial Awareness: Geography can teach us about spatial relationships and how different places are connected. This understanding is essential for urban planning, transportation, and logistics. 7 Why is the study of Geography important? Understanding the Earth: The field of Geography helps us understand the physical characteristics of the Earth. This can include landforms, climates, and ecosystems. This knowledge is crucial for managing natural resources and addressing environmental issues. 8 Why is the study of Geography important? Cultural Awareness: Geography can help to provide insights into different cultures, languages, and societies. It helps us appreciate the diversity of human life and foster a sense of global citizenship. 9 Why is the study of Geography important? Environmental Stewardship: When we study Geography, we learn about the impact of human activities on the environment and the importance of sustainable practices. This knowledge is crucial for addressing issues like climate change and conservation. 10 Why is the study of Geography important? Economic Understanding: Geography can help us understand the distribution of resources, trade patterns, and economic activities. This information is important for making informed decisions in many aspects of everyday life, business, and government. 11 Why is the study of Geography important? Global Interconnectedness: Geography can help us understand the interconnectedness of the world. It can highlight how events in one distant part of the world can impact other regions. This can instill a sense of global responsibility. 12 Why is the study of Geography important? Critical Thinking: The study of geography can encourage critical thinking and problem-solving skills. It involves analyzing data, interpreting maps, and understanding complex systems. 13 Why is the study of Geography important? The world facing people in the future will be more crowded, the physical environment more threatened, and the global economy more competitive and interconnected. Understanding that world, that environment, and that economy will require high levels of competency in Geography, because Geography means a sensitivity to location, to scale, to movement, to patterns, to resources and conflicts. 14 How does this relate to the Geography of Toronto? In the upcoming weeks, we will look at how: Geography played a key role in developing Toronto’s status as a major economic power in North America. How it became a transportation hub. How the natural resources of the surrounding landscape contributed to the city’s growth and development. How crime is influenced by the geography of the city. How new industries are developed according to the geography of the city. 15 What’s next? Before next week’s class: Please introduce yourself and respond to at least 5 of your fellow students.
