7 Technical-Vocational- Education (TVE) Carpentry - Module 1 Lesson 1-2 Topic: Preparing Construction Materials and Tools Preparing Construction Materials and Tools Learning Competency(ies) Code: Prepare Construction Materials and Tools TVE_STVEP_W1-2 I. CONCEPT NOTES: INTRODUCTION: This lesson is designed and written with you in mind. It is here to help you understand The Preparation of Construction Materials and Tools. The scope of this module permits it’s to be used in many different learning situations. The language used recognizes the diverse vocabulary level of students. The lessons are arranged to follow the standard sequence of the course. At the end of this module, you should be able to: Content Standard: A. demonstrate an understanding of the underlying principles in the preparation of carpentry tools and construction materials. Performance Standard: A. Prepare carpentry tools and construction materials based on industry standards. Lesson Objectives: 1. Identify materials and tools for a task. 2. Describe tools and materials used in carpentry. 3. Prepare tools and materials for a task. Information Sheet Description of Materials and Tools In this lesson you will describe the materials and tools according to their description per job requirement in carpentry. Materials: Lumber - sawn timber Nails - made of metal used for fastening woods Cement - a powdered substance when mixed with water binder aggregates Sand - fine gritty, substance found in the shore and dessert Plywood - thin cross laminated sheet of wood Module Grade 7 Week 1-2 1 Gravel - coarse aggregate Tools: Pull-push-rule - used for measuring long distances Claw Hammer - used for driving and pulling out nails Cross-cut-saw - tool used for cutting across the grain Ripsaw - used for cutting along the grain Plumb bob - used for vertical alignment Try square - used to test the squareness of a stock Hack saw - fine toothed saw used to cut metals and pipes Level Bar - tools used in checking vertical and horizontal position Types and Uses of Construction Materials and Tools A. Construction Materials Name Uses Lumber It is used for siding, flooring, paneling and built-ins. It can also be used for trusses in houses. Nails It is used to fasten one or more objects to each other. Nails are used to fasten pieces of wood together, but it can also used with plastic, drywall, masonry, and concrete. Screw It is used to hold objects together. G.I wire It is used to tie reinforcement bars and other objects. It can also be used to hang or suspend objects. Cement It is used for construction that sets, hardens, and adheres to other materials to bind them together. Name Uses Sand It is used in construction to provide the strength and stability to other materials such as asphalt, concrete, mortar, render, gravel and cement Gravel It is used in construction to provide the strength and stability to other materials such as asphalt, concrete, mortar, render, sand and cement Steel It is used to resist compressive and tensile Reinforcement stresses in concretes for crack prevention. G. I Sheet It is widely used for roofing in houses but it can also be used as walls, panels, covers, rolling shutters and partition walls. B. Carpentry Tools Name Uses Try Square It is used to check the perpendicularity of corners. Push Pull Rule It is used to measure the length of materials Plumb Bob It is used as the vertical reference of a structure. Cross Cut Saw It is used for cutting wood or lumber across the grain. Hack Saw It is fine toothed saw blade that is used to cut metals and pipes. Claw Hammer It is used for driving and pulling out nails Bench Vise It is used to hold the workpiece during operations such as sawing and drilling. Name Uses Level Bar It is used in checking vertical and horizontal position. Electric Drill It is primarily used for making round holes. It is usually fitted with a bit. Auger Bit It is used to drill holes into wood. Crowbar It is used for removing bigger nails and forcing two objects apart. Screwdriver It is used for turning screws with slotted heads. C-Clamp It is used to hold wood or metal work piece used in carpentry and welding. Sledgehammer It is used the break up concrete slabs. II. LEARNING TASK: A.
