Evaṁ me sutaṁ— At one time the Buddha was staying near ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā ukkaṭṭhāyaṁ viharati Ukkaṭṭhā, in the Subhaga Forest at the root of a subhagavane sālarājamūle. magnificent sal tree. There the Buddha addressed the mendicants, Tatra kho bhagavā bhikkhū āmantesi: “Mendicants!” “bhikkhavo”ti. “Venerable sir,” they replied. “Bhadante”ti te bhikkhū bhagavato paccassosuṁ. The Buddha said this: Bhagavā etadavoca: “Mendicants, I will teach you the explanation “sabbadhammamūlapariyāyaṁ vo, bhikkhave, of the root of all things. desessāmi. They perceive those of streaming radiance as Ābhassare ābhassarato sañjānāti; those of streaming radiance. Having perceived those of streaming radiance ābhassare ābhassarato saññatvā ābhassare as those of streaming radiance, they conceive maññati, ābhassaresu maññati, ābhassarato them to be those of streaming radiance … maññati, ābhassare meti maññati, ābhassare abhinandati. They perceive those of universal beauty as Subhakiṇhe subhakiṇhato sañjānāti; those of universal beauty. But then they conceive them to be those of uni‐ subhakiṇhe subhakiṇhato saññatvā subhakiṇhe versal beauty … maññati, subhakiṇhesu maññati, subhakiṇhato maññati, subhakiṇhe meti maññati, subhakiṇhe abhinandati. They perceive those of abundant fruit as those Vehapphale vehapphalato sañjānāti; of abundant fruit. Having perceived those of abundant fruit as vehapphale vehapphalato saññatvā vehapphale those of abundant fruit, they conceive them to maññati, vehapphalesu maññati, vehapphalato be those of abundant fruit … maññati, vehapphale meti maññati, vehapphale abhinandati. Diṭṭhaṁ diṭṭhato sañjānāti; Having perceived the seen as the seen, they diṭṭhaṁ diṭṭhato saññatvā diṭṭhaṁ maññati, conceive it to be the seen … diṭṭhasmiṁ maññati, diṭṭhato maññati, diṭṭhaṁ meti maññati, diṭṭhaṁ abhinandati. Why is that? Taṁ kissa hetu? Because they haven’t completely understood it, ‘Apariññātaṁ tassā’ti vadāmi. I say. They perceive the heard as the heard. Sutaṁ sutato sañjānāti; Having perceived the heard as the heard, they sutaṁ sutato saññatvā sutaṁ maññati, sutasmiṁ conceive it to be the heard … maññati, sutato maññati, sutaṁ meti maññati, sutaṁ abhinandati. Why is that? Taṁ kissa hetu? Because they haven’t completely understood it, ‘Apariññātaṁ tassā’ti vadāmi. I say. They perceive the thought as the thought. Mutaṁ mutato sañjānāti; Having perceived the thought as the thought, mutaṁ mutato saññatvā mutaṁ maññati, they conceive it to be the thought … mutasmiṁ maññati, mutato maññati, mutaṁ meti maññati, mutaṁ abhinandati. Nānattaṁ nānattato sañjānāti; Having perceived diversity as diversity, they nānattaṁ nānattato saññatvā nānattaṁ maññati, conceive it to be diversity … nānattasmiṁ maññati, nānattato maññati, nānattaṁ meti maññati, nānattaṁ abhinandati. Why is that? Taṁ kissa hetu? Because they haven’t completely understood it, ‘Apariññātaṁ tassā’ti vadāmi. I say. They perceive all as all. Sabbaṁ sabbato sañjānāti; Having perceived all as all, they conceive it to sabbaṁ sabbato saññatvā sabbaṁ maññati, be all … sabbasmiṁ maññati, sabbato maññati, sabbaṁ meti maññati, sabbaṁ abhinandati.
