Summary
This document provides a detailed overview of tooth malformations, including their causes, key genes involved in development, associated anomalies and tooth structure defects. It discusses several factors influencing tooth development, including genetic mutations and environmental influences. The content also covers the various stages of teeth development, including bud, cap, and bell stages.

MALFORMATION OF TEETH Main causes of disturbed tooth development: - Disturbance to epithelial-mesenchymal interactions - Trauma - Infection - Mutation from heredity/environmental causes Key genes: - MSX1 (muscle segment homeobox 1): crucial for craniofacial development, involved in tooth morphogenesis -\> initiation and development of tooth buds. Mutation = cleft lip + palate, hypodontia (2^nd^ premolar + 3^rd^ molar) - PAX9 (paired box 9): formation of molars. Mutation = oligodontia -\> esp molars, family pattern of inheritance Humans only having 2 dentitions: - Precise + specialised teeth for omnivorous diet - Designed to withstand high chewing forces - Replacing = significant resources and developmental adjustments -\> unnecessary for human diet What anomalies where: Bud: - Tooth number = hypodontia, oligodontia, anodontia, hyperdontia - Tooth position = ectopic tooth development, transposition Cap: - Tooth shape = gemination, fusion, dens-in-dente - Tooth size = macrodontia, microdontia - Tooth structure = compound odontoma, complex odontoma, extra cusps Bell: - Shape = talon cusp, taurodontism - Size = macrodontia, microdontia - Structure = amelogenesis imperfecta, dentinogenesis imperfecta, dentin dysplasia - Enamel structure + density = turners hypoplasia, enamel hypoplasia - Eruption = delayed eruption, impaction - Root = radicular dilaceration, short root, root fusion, accessory roots, agenesis/hypoplasia of roots
