What living things can you spot? There are many places that are homes to living things. A habitat is a space where an animal or a plant inhabits and gets what it needs to stay alive. A habitat provides air, food, water, and shelter for a living thing. It also provides a safe place for it to raise its young. Four animals are missing in this picture! They have left behind clues. What are these animals? We cannot find many living things on concrete pavements, roads, or in buildings. Why? The environment and other living things in the habitat affect the living things staying in the same habitat. Solve this! A living thing lives in a habitat that provides air, food, shelter, and water for it to stay alive. Clues: - Inhabit - Live in - Shelter - A place that protects a living thing from its environment - Environment - The conditions around a living thing Page 25: Observe the conditions in the different habitats around your school where you can find wildlife. Write down some words that you can use to describe an environment. Use these helping words to help you. - Bright – Sunny – Dark – Shady – Hot – Wet – Warm – Damp – Cold – Dry - Cool Words to describe the amount of light present in an environment. - Light: Bright, Sunny, Shady, Dark Words to describe the temperature of an environment. - Temperature: Warm, Damp, wet, hot Words to describe the amount of water present in an environment. - Cool, Cold, Cry Describe these environments using the helping words. - School field: sunny and dry - Drain: wet and damp - Below a tree: shady and warmer - Wildlife: Animals and plants living in natural conditions - Temperature: How hot or cold something is Page 26: Garden Go to a garden near your house. Can you find some plants and animals? Gardens are home to many different plants and animals. In their habitats, plants receive sunlight to make food while animals find food from their surroundings. Some plants like the morning glory have weak stems. They Twine on fences to reach for sunlight. Bees and butterflies are often found near flower. They feed on a sweet juice called nectar inside flowers. Other plants like the ixora and hibiscus have woody stems that keep them upright. Caterpillars eat the leaves of plants. They feed on the leaves of plants. Snails feed on leaves too. It's bright and sunny here! Grasshoppers feed on plants. They are usually green. Ladybirds feed on insects Which are harmful to plants. Page 28: Up a Tree Look up at a tree. It has many branches and leaves. It is cool and shady under this shelter. What can you see in a tree? - Many birds perch in trees, especially at night. They build nests for their young. They feed on fruits, seeds, and insects found in trees. - Bird’s nest ferns grow in the crooks of trees where it is damp and shady. - Spiders spin sticky webs to help them trap insects! - Chameleons live in trees. They feed on insects. - Squirrels live in trees too. The tree provides shelter and protects the squirrels from animals that eat them. - It feels cool standing under the shade of the tree! Clues - Crook - A curved or bent part of something - Perch - To sit on or near the edge of something A rotting log Look around a rotting log. What living things can you find around a rotting log? It is cool, dark and damp on the rotten log. What are the animals feeding on? Ugh! That must test discusting. Beetles and woodlice feed on rotting wood. Ants build their homes in soil too! An ant nest is full of tunnels and rooms! Earthworms live in shady and damp soil. They feed on rotting plant parts in the soil. Centipedes live under logs or rocks. They feed on insects, spiders and other small animals. Tick (✔) the correct sentences. - A butterfly and its young feed on the same type of food. Ans : False - A monkey lives in a tree because the tree provides food and shelter for it, and protects it from animals that may eat it. Ans : True - Ants and earthworms belong to the same habitat. Ans : False Page 30: Pond Find a freshwater pond. What lives there? Different types of water plants can be found in a pond. Some plants grow from the bottom of a pond. They have their leaves above the water’s surface. To receive sunlight. This is because very little sunlight can past through water to reach the bottom of the pond. Some plants float in water. - Water lettuce - Duck - Water hyacinth - water louts Mosses like damp and shady conditions. They often grow on rocks near a pond. - Moss Algae are plants that grow in water. They are food for some of the animals. - Algae Fish live in water. They feed on a algae water plants an even insects. - Fish Many fish do not like direct sunlight. They find shelter in the shade of water palnts. - Snail Frogs like to stay near ponds because they need water to keep their bodies wet. They feed on insects such as dragonflies and mosquitoes. Frogs lay their eggs in ponds. - Frog - Dragonfly - Mosquito Dragonflies like to fly near the surface of ponds. They feed on insects such as mosquitoes. Wich live near ponds. Dragonflies lay their eggs in ponds. - Dragonfly eggs I am the young of a frog. I live in water too! - Tadpole I will grow up in water too! - Young of a dragonfly I am the young of a frog. I will grow into a frog! - Frog eggs - Turtle Page 32: Beach Go to the beach. Can you spot some animals and plants? There are not many plants on the beach. Plants in this habitat have to cope with the salty seawater, waves, and wind. Few plants can survive here. Seagull Seagulls come here to look for food such as crabs, fish, and shellfish. Shellfish like clams are often washed up onto the beach. clams Coconut trees often grow on the seashore. They grow well in sandy soil under plenty of sunlight. Mussels are shellfish that grow on rocks. Mussels Crabs live in holes in the sand. They can hide between the rocks too. Crab Seaweeds grow in shallow seawater or on rocky shores. Seaweed A hermit crab hides inside its shell when it is frightened. Hermit crab It is very bright and sunny here! Clues Cope - To deal with a problem Page 33: ocean The ocean is a huge habitat made up of saltwater. Plants and animals that live here must be able to survive in a saltwater environment. What plants and animals can you find here? - Stingray - Shark - Seaweed - Sea turtle - Clownfish – Seahorse – Octopus – Abalone – Starfish - Oyster Solve this! 1. Which living thing does not belong to a pond habitat? Circle. - Duck - Cattail - Dragonfly - Butterfly Ans : Butterfly 2. A jellyfish and a dolphin stay in the same habitat as a clownfish. What habitat is that? Ans : - Ocean Page 34: Science in Context The rubbish left behind by people can harm the living things found on the beach. When an environment is dirtied or damaged, many living things may not survive. They may not be able to find food, keep safe or have young. Living things that inhabit and share a habitat depend on one another in many ways. A change to just one type of living thing can affect other living things. When trees are cut down, animals that live in them lose their homes. Animals that breathe in polluted air or drink dirty water can get sick. Marine animals cannot keep warm if their outer coverings are coated with oil. Birds lose their homes and even their young when their nests are destroyed. This is how we should protect and care for the environment: Oh no! The flowers are gone! Without flowers, I will go hungry! - We should not pluck flowers. - We should plant more trees. - We should throw litter into dustbins. - We can help sea animals that have been washed onto the shore. Page 35: Let's investigate! Let's compare the living things found in two different habitats. 1. What are the differences between the two habitats? - A rainforest has a warm and wet environment. - A desert has a hot and dry environment. 2. How are the leaves of the plants different in the two habitats? - The plant growing on the forest floor has rounded leaves. - The plant growing in the desert has neddle leaves. 3. Draw one animal you can find: - a. in a rainforest. - b. in a desert. 4. Which habitat houses more plants and animals? Why do you think so? Ans : Page 36: Tropical rainforest Living things live in environments that suit them. An environment that suits one living thing may not suit another. The tropical rainforest has a warm and wet environment. It is suitable for many living things. Some environments are not as favourable for living things compared to others. Fewer living things are found in such habitats. Animals living in these habitats have special features to help them survive. - Orangutan - Monkey - Parrot - Snake - Tiger Tropical - Hot and wet weather Favourable - Helpful, giving a result that helps or benefits Page 36: Desert - A hot and dry habitat with a high temperature in the day and a low temperature at night. - Camel - A fennec fox has large ears to help it keep cool in the hot desert. - Cactus - Fennec fox - Lizard - Meerkat Polar region - A very cold and icy habitat with frozen ground covered with snow. - Reindeer - Walrus - Polar bear - A polar bear has thick fur and fat to help it survive the cold in a polar habitat. Think-Pair-Share Compare the three habitats. Which of them have environmental conditions that are not favorable for living things? What are these conditions?
