Uthman’s Lineage His full name was Uthman bin ‘Affan bin Abu Al-‘Aas bin Umayyah bin Abdu Shams bin Abdu Manaf bin Qusay bin Kilaab. Thus, the lineage of Uthman meets the lineage of the Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬in their great grandfather (Abd Manaf). His nickname was Abu Abdullah and Dhun-Nurayn. He was called by Dhun- Nurayn because he married the Prophet’s two daughters; first was Ruqayyah then after Ruqayyah died, he married Ummu Kulthum. Uthman’s Conversion to Islam Uthman embraced Islam after Abu Bakr invited him. He and Talha bin Ubaydullah came to Abu Bakr and listened to something from the Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬what came from the Qur’an. Then, without any hesitation, he accepted Islam and announced it being one of the first Muslim at the time of Prophet ‫ﷺ‬. Then, Uthman and his wife (Ruqayyah) migrated to Habasha (Abyssinia). Uthman’s Physical Qualities He was white-person, a medium-person that was neither short nor tall, thin in complexion, has a great beard dyed with henna, a broad shoulder, lots of hair on his head, has a pointed nose, huge legs, long arms, frizzy hair and has a handsome face. Modesty – Uthman known as a modesty person, even the Prophet ‫ﷺ‬ ashamed of him and says to those who asked him about it: “Am I not ashamed of a man in whom even the angels are ashamed of him because of his modesty?”. 4  MODULE IN SEERAH & HADITH 10 b. Generosity – Uthman’s generosity reached a level of moral existence not previously known. He bought a well of Aroma so that the Muslims would drink from it, and he bought a plot of land next to the Mosque of the Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬so that Muslims do not crowd into prayer. And he prepared the army of hardships until the Prophet said: “No harm to Uthman what he did after this day”. c. Humility – Uthman was known for humility, to the extent that he did not wake his servant to bring him ablution water if he stood for the night prayer and brought it himself. d. Courageous – One of the most famous indications of Uthman’s courage is that the Prophet sent him in Hudaybiyya to speak to Quraysh, so he went and did not fear, as he attended all the scenes with the Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬except for battle of Badr and he had left this battle with the order of the Prophet to take care of his wife Ruqayya, may God be pleased with her. Uthman’s Social Status - Uthman delighted with a great position in his people, as he was rich, shy, well-spoken, so his people loved him and knew his capability. - After his conversion to Islam, he also delighted with a prominent position with the Prophet ‫ﷺ‬, so his daughter Ruqayya married Uthman, and when she died, her sister Ummu Kulthum married Uthman. - Uthman also gained a great deal among the Companions, so that Abdullah bin Omar, may God be pleased with him, said: We were in the time of the Prophet not equating anyone with Abu Bakr, then Umar, then Uthman, then we leave the companions of the Prophet with no difference between them. Uthman’s Virtues 1. He is one of the first accepted Islam. 2. He married the two daughters of the Prophet Ruqayya and then Ummu Kulthum, may God be pleased with them. 3. Uthman migrated twice to Abyssinia and then to Medina. 4. He is one of the writers of revelation at the time of Prophet Muhammad ‫ﷺ‬. 5. He is one of the ten persons that Allah promised to enter paradise. 6. The Prophet made the pledge of allegiance to Ridwan on his behalf.
