NEOCLASSIC MODERN CONTEMPORARY (TRADITIONAL) ART ART ART An artistic style prevalent in Europe from the mid-1700’s to the late 1800’s. This style usually employed classical (Greco-Roman) ideals of beauty and proportion of the human figure. Tackling subjects from SPOLIARIUM (1884) Juan Luna Juan Luna’s SPOLARIUM - It is an oil painting and was painted by Juan Luna in Rome in 1884, winning the second prize at the Madrid Academy Exhibition of Oil Paintings. - He spent eight months completing the painting which depicts dying gladiators. The picture recreates a despoiling scene in a Roman circus where dead gladiators are stripped of weapons and garments. - The Spolarium can be viewed in the main gallery located on the ground floor of the National Museum of the Philippines. FISHING SCENE (1942) Fernando Amorsolo FISHING SCENE - The painting characterized one of the more distinguished jobs of Filipinos – fishing. - The most glaring act presented was that of a man and a woman carrying a netted basket that was apparently heavy The modern style rejected “realism” and emphasized “expressiveness.” Modern art refers to the period that began in the 1928, pioneered by Victorio Edades. THE BUILDERS (1928) Victorio Edades - The Builders is one of Victorio Edades’ major works that he exhibited in 1928 during his one-man show. - Edades executed this upon his return to the Philippines from studies in the United States. - In his campaign for modernism, this is one of his paintings that shows his enhanced knowledge and skill in Contemporary art is the art of today, produced in the second half of the 20th century or in the 21st century. It is part of a cultural dialogue that concerns larger contextual FILIPINA DH (1995) Imelda Cajipe Endaya Imelda Cajipe Endaya shows Filipina: DH (1995)– an installation with found objects, plaster, paper mache sculpture, a tape player and slide projector. This piece features textured domestic artifacts interspersed with momentos of family and religious devotion, and was inspired by the Singapore governments controversial and, many felt, unjust hanging of Flor Contemplacion, a Art Installation in Sand Dunes of Paoay - Leeroy - The installation is notable for its use of local materials and its integration into the unique landscape of the Paoay sand dunes. - New's work often features intricate, organic forms made from bamboo, recycled plastics, and other materials, creating a striking contrast with the natural surroundings. - This project in Paoay exemplifies his approach to art, which seeks to provoke thought about sustainability, ecological balance, and the relationship between human activity and the environment.
