IT Maintenance & Support Lecture 2 By Nawroz Fadhil Ahmed 2024-2025 Computer System One Outlines ❖ Introduction to Computer ❖ Computer System ❖ Data and Information ❖ Properties of Computer ❖ Components of a Computer ❖ Hardware ❖ Input Device ❖ Output Device ❖ Storage Device ❖ System Unit Device ❖ Software 3 Information and Communications Technology ❑ Information and Communications Technology, refers to all equipment, applications and services that involve communication. ❑ Computers, Cellphones, Televisions, Radios and Satellite system are all parts of ICT ❑ ICT covers any product that store, retrieve, manipulate, transmit or receive information electronically in a digital form. ❑ In other words, ICT means technology used to get the information needed 4 Digital Age (Information Age) The Information Age (also known as the Computer Age or Digital Age) is a historic period in the 21st century characterized by the rapid shift from traditional industry that the Industrial Revolution brought through industrialization, to an economy based on information technology. The Digital Revolution refers to the advancement of technology from analog electronic and mechanical devices to the digital technology available today. The era started to during the 1980s and is ongoing. 5 Digital Age (Information Age) Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow Computers are everywhere: Integral to our daily lives. Billions of people use computers (PCs, Laptops, smartphones) daily. Used at Home, Work, School, government, company and etc. Applications - Word processors - Internet - Artificial Intelligent - Web Development - GPS systems - Mobile phones - Weather prediction 6 Introduction to Computer Computer Definition A computer is a simply programmable device that processes the input data into useful output information and made up of a combinational of electronic and electro-mechanical components. A computer is a device (hardware) that takes input such as numbers, text, sound, image, animations, video, etc., and converts it, presenting the changed input (processed input) as output. 7 Introduction to Computer All numbers, text, sound, images, animations, and video used as input are called data, and all numbers, text, sound, images, animations, and video returned as output are called information. The general-purpose of computer that Inputs, Processes, Outputs and Storages the data. The data is processed according to a set of instructions knows as programs (software). 8 Introduction to Computer The first electronic digital computers were developed in 1946 in USA, which was the size of a room 9 Computer Parts Nowadays 10 Data and Information ❑ Data: A collection of unprocessed characters/instructions, such as values, or measurements ❑ Information: a collection of processed characters/instructions. ❑ However, information tells you something that you did not know before. 11 Data and Information Input Output 12 Properties of a Computer ❑ High speed that can analyze the data that input from users ❑ Accuracy: Does not do any mistake. ❑ It can store the entire analyzed data. ❑ Share the data with other computers. 13 Components of a Computer There are two main components of computer Hardware Software Input Device Operating System or System software Output Device Application Programs System Unit Storage Device Communication Devices 14 Components of a Computer A computer contains many electric, electronic, and mechanical/physical components known as hardware. Input Device Example: Keyboard, Mouse, Microphone, Scanner. Output Device Example: Monitor, Speaker, Printer. System Unit Example: CPU, RAM Storage Device Example: Hard disk, Flash memory Communications Example: Wireless router, Modem, Lan card Device 15 Input Devices ❑ The input device is used to get data into the computer, such as keyboards, mouse, scanners, cameras, microphones and the other devices. ❑ Any hardware component that allows you to enter data, programs, commands (instructions), and user responses into a computer. ❑ Input Example: Barcode reader Joystick Microphone Scanner Mouse Keyboard 16 Output Device An output device is a piece of hardware equipment used to communicate the results of data processing carried out by an information processing system (such as a computer) which converts the electronically generated information into human-readable form, Output Example: Headphone Speaker Projector Printer Monitor 17 Output Device Smart Screen Barcode Printer Plotter 18 Storage Devices A storage device is any hardware that is used for storing, and reading software, data and information for future use temporarily or permanently. 19 The System Unit The system unit is a case that contains electronic components (hardware) of the computer used to process data. All computers and mobile devices have a system unit. CPU - Processor RAM 20 Communication Devices Communication devices enables a computer to send and receive data, instructions, and information to and from one or more computers or mobile devices MiFi Wireless Adapter Network Adapter Wireless Modem 21 Computer Software The term of software: ❑ Refers to the instructions that makes the computer work. ❑ Refers to the programs that control the hardware. ❑ Example: ❑ Antivirus (AVG), Database (Access), Internet Browsing (Google Chrome), E-mail (Outlook), and etc. 22 Computer Software There are some Software (Application and Operating System) example 23 Thanks!
