Lecture 1 INTRODUCTION TO RELIGION. LEARNING OBJECTIVES. Religion: Definition. Reasons for its existence. Significance and role in human life. RELIGION. Religion is sincerity. ‘We said ‘To whom? The Prophet(P.B.U.H) said: ‘To Allah, his book, his messenger, the leaders of the Muslims and to their common people.’ MEANING OF RELIGION. The meaning of religion is belief in, worship of, obedience to a supernatural power, powers considered to be divine to have control over human destiny. DEFINITION OF RELIGION. First Definition: Religion is a way of life (one which embraces a total world view, creation ethical demand and certain social practices) that refuses to accept the secular(non religious) view that sees human life as nothing more than complex bundles of atoms in an ultimately meaningless universe. DEFINITION OF RELIGION. Second Definition: As the civilization progressed the human beings adopted laws and ethics in their personal and social lives. These rules and principles whether divine or developed by various philosophers and Holy men have been recognized as religion. TYPES OF RELIGIONS. There are two types of Religions. Revealed Religions. Those religions which have been revealed by Allah Almighty for the guidance of mankind are called revealed religions. There are three revealed religions. 1. Islam. 2. Christianity. 3. Judiasm. Un-revealed Religions. Religions that are self-made by humans beings are called Un-revealed religions, such as Hinduism and Buddhism. REASONS FOR ITS EXISTENCE. Need and its importance: This is a fact that religion is the basic need of every human beings, and our life cannot be completed without it. Man has always adopted some principles of religion in his life and all the world thinkers highlight its importance. Evolution of Religion: To get the success stage by stage and step by step from manmade gods concepts to reach divine guidance. Religious concept: Guidance provided by Allah Almighty through his Prophets. REQUIREMENT OF RELIGION. The natural urge. As a human necessity for ethical values. As a universal truth for all nations. Foremost need of human society. SLOS 1. To recall the student, develop a better understanding of Religion. 2. To underline the significance of Religion. 3. To match the role of religion in human life.
