OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY PRACTICE FRAMEWORK I OT 201 - OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY FUNDAMENTALS LECTURE 1 LEARNING OBJECTIVES Introducing the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) Introducing the Occupational Therapy (OT) practice framework document Introducing the OT services Introducing the OT Domain Introducing the OT process 2 INTERNATIONAL CLASSIFICATION OF FUNCTIONING, DISABILITY AND HEALTH (ICF) Created by the World Health Organization and endorsed by all 191 members in 2001. A classification of health and health-related domains. These domains are classified from the body, individual and societal perspectives (World Health Organization, 2001). Since an individual’s functioning and disability occurs in a context, the ICF also includes a list of environmental factors. It provides a standard language and a conceptual basis for the definition and measurement of health and disability. 3 ICF (CONT.) Emphasizes ‘health’ and ‘disability’ in a new way. Every human being can experience a decrement in health (impairment) and thereby experience some degree of disability. Disability is not something that only happens to a minority of humans. ICF thus ‘mainstreams’ the experience of disability and recognizes it as a universal human experience. 4 ICF (CONT.) By shifting the focus from cause to impact it places all health conditions on an equal footing ICF takes into account the social aspects of disability not only as a 'medical' or 'biological' dysfunction. By including Contextual Factors, the ICF allows the evaluation of the impact of the environment on the person's functioning. 5 ICF DIAGRAM 6 TABLE ON PAGE 286 (RADOMSKI AND TROMBLEY) 7 OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY PRACTICE FRAMEWORK (OTPF) Official document of the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA).
