The mucous membrane that covers the epiglottis extends to the posterior (back) part of the tongue. This membrane forms folds called the glossoepiglottic folds. There are three glossoepiglottic folds in total: one median (in the middle) and two lateral (on the sides). Between the median and the lateral folds, there are depressions known as the epiglottic valleculae. These valleculae are where saliva from the surface of the tongue can collect.
