Kinetic Molecular Model of Liquids and Solids PDF

Summary

This presentation discusses the kinetic molecular model of liquids and solids, explaining their properties and characteristics. It describes how the model relates to matter as composed of particles in constant motion and how heat affects the kinetic energy of those particles, leading to phase changes.

Kinetic Molecular Model of Liquids and Solids John Alfred J. Lobaton Discussant Objectives: 1. Be able to explain properties of liquids and solids using the Kinetic Molecular Model. 2. Be able to describe different types of intermolecular model. What is matter? Matter is anything that occupies space and has mass. Commonly, there are three (3) states of matter, namely solid, liquid, and gas. What is Kinetic? Kinetic relates to movement. Molecular relates to particles. What is Kinetic Molecular Model? Kinetic Molecular Model of matter - relates to matter as made up of particles that are constantly moving. It has four (4) premises: What is Kinetic Molecular Model? What is Kinetic Molecular Model? 1. All matter consists of particles. 2. The particles are in constant random motion. 3. There are spaces between the particles. What is Kinetic Molecular Model? 4. There are forces of attraction and repulsion between the particles. COMPARISON OF THE CHARACTERITICS OF THE SOLID AND LIQUID Solids Liquids No definite shape, Shape and Have definite shape assume the shape of the Volume and definite volume container but has a definite volume Rigid or inelastic Movement of Can move/slide past one particles but they can particles another. vibrate SOLID LIQUID Particles are difficult Particles are not easy to Compressibility to compress compress There are small spaces in Spaces in Closely packed / between particles (bigger between Very minimal space spaces than solids but Particles between particles smaller than gases) Attractive forces between Very strong Quite Strong particles How does heat affect the kinetic of particles? What is Heat? How does heat affect the kinetic of particles? Is heat a form No. It is just an of energy? energy in transition. When solids or liquids are heated up, the kinetic energy of their particles increases move causing faster. them to As temperature and kinetic energy rises, there comes a time that the movement and the particles overcome the forces of atraction between each particles and they change phase. Solids can melt or sublime and liquids can vaporize.
