Summary
This document discusses the different states of matter (solids, liquids, and gases) using the kinetic-molecular theory. It explains how the kinetic energy of particles and the forces between them determine the state of matter. The document is likely part of a chemistry lesson or textbook.

â€2.3 States Of Matter‬ â€Kinetic-molecular theory‬ â€-‬ â€All matter is composed of tiny particles ( atoms, molecules, or ions)‬ â€that are in constant motion‬ â€-‬ â€The energy determines the the speed of motion of the particles and‬ â€the greater the amount of energy ( usually thermal ) the faster the‬ â€motions and the opposite is true as well‬ â€-‬ â€Particles would fly apart is they are not limited in some way‬ †tate of matter is determined (differentiated) by kinetic energy of the‬ S â€particles and the attractive forces between the particles.‬ â€Solids‬ â€-‬ â€have relatively little kinetic energy compared with the attractive forces‬ â€that are present between particles. The attractive forces significantly‬ â€limit the movement of the particles which vibrate in a fixed position‬ â€-‬ â€Fixed volume and shape‬ â€-‬ â€Incompressible‬ â€Liquids‬ â€-‬ â€Their particles have a degree of freedom and have moderate kinetic‬ â€energy. The particles have enough kinetic energy to partially‬ â€overcome the attractive forces between them and are slightly more‬ â€spread apart.‬ â€-‬ â€The volume of a liquid is constant (definite)‬ â€-‬ â€Liquid takes the shape of the container‬ â€-‬ â€Is nearly incompressible‬ â€Gases‬ â€-‬ â€Has enough kinetic energy for its particles to completely overcome all‬ â€the attractive forces between them so the particles move rapidly in‬ â€random directions across great distances‬ â€-‬ â€Has a variable shape‬ â€-‬ â€They are also fluids‬ â€-‬ â€Easy to compress‬
