Unit 2.1 Introduction to Biodiversity Vocabulary Biodiversity Species Richness Genetic Diversity Species Diversity Population Bottleneck Ecosystems Community Specialist Species Generalist Species Endemic Species Endangered Species CITES Biological Hotspots Pioneer Species Invasive Species Speciation Poaching Species Evenness Environmental Stressors Canopy GMO Habitat Resilience HIPPCO Watch this clip and summarize it in an paragraph consisting of four facts from the video.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QKIMS0hVJdc&list=PLllVwaZQkS2qK4Z6xBVDRak8an1-kqsgm&index=9 Why do people poach endangered species? What happens to the value of the animal as it becomes rarer? What can be done to save endangered species. Can zoo’s be used to help save endangered animals? How? What is a captive breeding program? Give an example of a successful captive breeding program. (Look this up) 2.2 Ecosystem Services Vocabulary Ecosystem Service Functions Anthropogenic Ecological Consequences *Note Ecosystem service functions is a very broad topic. Questions about these are typically categorical. For example “what type of service function is ______? “ There are four categories of ecosystem service functions. The categories are Provisional, regulating, cultural and supporting. Provisional means getting something to sustain you. Ex. Forest provide food. Cultural means you celebrate it for your beliefs- Ex. Forest has spiritual powers that relieve stress Regulating and Supporting gets a little muddy. Typically Forest can be regulating if they regulate the amount of CO2 and O2 in the atmosphere. What are 4 Ecosystem service functions that forests provide? Choose one of each category. What are 4 Ecosystem service functions that soils provide?Choose one of each category. What are 4 Ecosystem service functions that oceans provide?Choose one of each category. Unit 2.3 Island Biogeography Vocabulary Island Biogeography Habitat Fragmentation Amphibians Indicator Species Externalities Hectares Disturbances Watch the following video and summarize in a well written 4 sentence paragraph?Great video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WJ06jCLOGgc&t=214s Include How does island size affect diversity What happens to diversity the farther an island is to a continent? How is extinction rate affected by the size of the island? How does immigration rate play a role in the size of the island. Unit 2.4 Ecological Tolerance Vocabulary Ecological Tolerance Stressors Watch the following and summarize in a well written paragraph. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eo9bJVx6iyI Unit 2.5 Natural Disruptions to Ecosystems Vocabulary Volcanoes Wildfires Tornadoes Hurricanes Tsunamis Drought Unit 2.6 Adaptations Vocabulary Climax communities Co-evolution What are 3 ways organisms are being affected by climate change. What is happening to insect borne disease as a result of global climate change? Unit 2.7 Ecological Succession Pioneer Species Primary and Secondary Succession
