CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION TO ECOLOGY, BIODIVERSITY, ECOSYSTEM, CLIMATE, AND POPULATION GROWTH OBJECTIVES OF THE LESSON LESSON PROPER ACTIVITY 1 Provide at least 5 verified definitions of the following terms. Provide citations. Write in a one whole sheet on yellow pad paper. Example: (put definition here). Merriam-Webster, 2021 LESSON PROPER WHAT IS ECOLOGY? LESSON PROPER OIKOS = house / habitat / place of living LOGOS = to study LESSON PROPER Objectives of Ecology: 1. To understand our environment. 2. To understand its social, political, economic, and technological dimensions. 3. To study the evolutionary development of organisms, the biological productivity, and energy flow in the natural system. 4. To develop mathematical models. LESSON PROPER WHAT IS BIODIVERSITY? LESSON PROPER Three components of biodiversity: 1. Diversity of genes - the total number of genetic characteristics in the genetic makeup of a species. 2. Diversity of number of species - monkeys, dragonflies, and meadow beauties are all different species. 3. Variety of ecosystems – lakes, ponds, and rivers are all freshwater ecosystems. Rocky coast, sand dune, estuary, salt marsh, coral reef are all marine ecosystems. LESSON PROPER WHAT IS ECOSYSTEM? LESSON PROPER WHAT IS CLIMATE? LESSON PROPER WHAT ABOUT POPULATION? LESSON PROPER Three key features of population: 1. Size - number of individuals in an area. 2. Density – measurement of population per unit area or unit volume. (what is population density?) How do you affect density? a. IMMIGRATION is movement of individuals into a population. b. EMIGRATION is movement of individuals out of a population 3. Dispersion – the spatial pattern of individuals in a population relative to one another. LESSON PROPER LESSON PROPER
