# Volume Controller A volume controller is classified as such because it uses the measured volume as a feedback signal to control the delivered volume output. The volume is constant while pressure may vary with changes in resistance and compliance. The device uses a piston or bellows as a drive mechanic to displace air or fluid, and control of this displacement controls the volume. # Flow Controller Flow controllers measure and control flow directly. Several methods exist for this measurement, including vortex sensors, heated wire grids, venturi pneumotachometers, and strain gauge flow sensors. The flow signal is used as feedback to control the ventilator's output # Time Controller Time controllers measure inspiratory and expiratory times, which then allow pressure and volume to vary with compliance and resistance changes. Neither pressure nor volume is directly used as a control signal. Thus, time controls the inspiratory and or expiratory phases.
