Information Systems 281 MANAGING THE CLOUD © BELGIUM CAMPUS 2023 Introduction The Internet has expanded our daily life abilities and cloud computing is the newest offering as service over the Web. Cloud computing has been considered a phenomenon in the IT and business world promising to deliver a host of benefits. Companies need to look and seriously consider the real value of incorporating the Cloud in their own businesses. This module is aimed at helping companies analyze several characteristics of their own business as well as pre-existing IT resources to identify why it would be good for them to adopt a Cloud Architecture. In general, Return on Investment has to be taking into consideration, apart from the cost. © BELGIUM CAMPUS 2023 Organizational Considerations Before they move some or their entire computer processing into the cloud, organizations must consider a number of factors. The decision to use cloud technology is fundamentally a business outsourcing decision rather than a technology decision. Some of these decisions include: How comfortable they are with entering into a partnering arrangement with a third party. how well constructed the provider’s operational and technology controls are with respect to: Confidentiality Privacy Availability Security Compliance. © BELGIUM CAMPUS 2023 Organizational Considerations … Organizations must evaluate the services provided, taking into account the standardization that accompanies third-party offerings versus the customized fit of in-house solutions. Organizations must make sure cloud technologies are aligned with the organization’s short and long-term IT and business strategies. © BELGIUM CAMPUS 2023 Organizational Considerations… Cloud computing represents the next step in the evolution of business technology. The question is not whether organizations will adopt it, but when and how. If they perform the right due diligence, organizations will find success in embracing cloud computing. © BELGIUM CAMPUS 2023 Cloud Clients Users access cloud computing using networked client devices, such as desktop computers, laptops, tablets, and smartphones. Some of these devices -cloud clients- rely on cloud computing for all or a majority of their applications. Examples are thin clients and the browser-based Chromebook. Many cloud applications do not require specific software on the client and instead use a web browser to interact with the cloud application. With JavaScript, Ajax and HTML5, these Web UI can achieve a similar, or even better, look and feel to native applications. Some cloud applications, however, support specific client software dedicated to these applications (e.g., virtual desktop clients and most email clients) © BELGIUM CAMPUS 2023 Cloud Computing Deployment Models © BELGIUM CAMPUS 2023 Compare © BELGIUM CAMPUS 2023 © BELGIUM CAMPUS 2023 Exercises 1. Explain the four cloud deployment types and give three benefits for each type. 2. What is a cloud client? How can it be used in virtualization? Give any two examples of cloud clients. 3. What are the factors organisations must consider before they move some or their entire computer processing into the cloud? 4. Compare public cloud and private cloud in terms of initial cost, customisation and security. © BELGIUM CAMPUS 2023 Cloud Computing Architecture Cloud computing architecture refers to the components and subcomponents required for cloud computing. These components typically consist of a front end platform, back end platforms, a cloud based delivery, and a network. Combined, these components make up cloud computing architecture. © BELGIUM CAMPUS 2023 The Intercloud The Intercloud is an interconnected global "cloud of clouds" and an extension of the Internet "network of networks" on which it is based. Cloud Engineering Cloud engineering is the application of engineering disciplines to cloud computing. © BELGIUM CAMPUS 2023 Cloud Engineering It is a multidisciplinary method encompassing contributions from diverse areas such as: Systems Software Web Performance Information Security Platform Risk Quality engineering © BELGIUM CAMPUS 2023 Threats and Issues of the Cloud Business leaders value the cloud and will make it a priority within the organization. However, several deterrents to the cloud remain. Among them, are: ❖Privacy – Public cloud service companies have control— to monitor at will—communication between host company and end user, and access user data (with or without permission) © BELGIUM CAMPUS 2023 Threats and Issues of the Cloud… ❖Vendor lock-in – Most standards that govern cloud computing are still being developed. Many cloud platforms and services are proprietary, meaning that they are built on the specific standards, tools and protocols developed by a particular vendor for its particular cloud offering. This can make migrating off a proprietary cloud platform prohibitively complicated and expensive. © BELGIUM CAMPUS 2023 Threats and Issues of the Cloud… Three types of vendor lock-in can occur with cloud computing: Platform lock-in - Migrating from a cloud provider using one platform to a cloud provider using a different platform could be very complicated. Data lock-in - Standards of ownership, i.e. who actually owns the data once it lives on a cloud platform, are not yet developed, which makes it complicated if cloud computing users ever decide to move data off of a cloud vendor's platform. Tools lock-in - If tools built to manage a cloud environment are not compatible with different kinds of both virtual and physical infrastructure, those tools will only be able to manage data or apps that live in the vendor's particular cloud environment. These lock-ins normally arise from the problem of having Homogeneous cloud computing. © BELGIUM CAMPUS 2023 Homogeneous clouds are cloud computing models that use building blocks supplied by a single vendor. To cater for these, users should look for cloud companies that offer Heterogeneous Cloud Computing. A heterogeneous cloud is considered one that includes on premise private clouds, public clouds and software-as-a-service clouds. Heterogeneous clouds can work with environments that are not virtualized, such as traditional data centers. Heterogeneous clouds also allow for the use of piece parts, such as hypervisors, servers, and storage, from multiple vendors. © BELGIUM CAMPUS 2023 Threats and Issues of the Cloud… ❖Regulations and Legal issues – Cloud hosts and end user have to comply with regulations from governments and other regulatory bodies, e.g. U.N, E.U etc. A multitude of laws and regulations have forced specific compliance requirements onto many companies that collect, generate or store data. Certain legal issues arise with cloud computing, including trademark infringement, security concerns and sharing of proprietary data resources. ❖Security - As cloud computing is achieving increased popularity, concerns are being voiced about the security issues. Physical control of the Private Cloud equipment is more secure than having the equipment off site and under someone else's control. © BELGIUM CAMPUS 2023 Threats and Issues of the Cloud ❖Sustainability - Countries with favorable conditions, such as Finland, Sweden and Switzerland, are trying to attract cloud computing data centers. Energy efficiency in cloud computing can result from energy-aware scheduling and server consolidation. ❖Performance Reliability – Cloud host must meet performance issues to continue having clients ❖Availability of services and data – Cloud host must ensure that the services of clients are always available via W3 ❖Complexity – Cloud companies must ensure that the platforms used by end users to gain access to the services are not complicated ❖Limited customization - Cloud services, esp. public clouds, come with limited to no customization of services for clients. © BELGIUM CAMPUS 2023 Opportunities of the Cloud The cloud also offers several strong points, however, including: Infrastructure flexibility – ability to scale up or scale down Faster deployment of applications and data Cost control Adaptation of cloud resources to real needs Improved productivity © BELGIUM CAMPUS 2023 Exercise 1. Give a brief explanation of how the cloud enable the following: a. Infrastructure flexibility b. Faster deployment of applications and data c. Cost control d. Adaptation of cloud resources to real needs e. Improved productivity 2. Discuss any five threats and issues of cloud computing 3. Differentiate a heterogeneous and homogenous cloud. 4. State and explain the three types cloud computing vendor lock-in. © BELGIUM CAMPUS 2023 THANK YOU /belgiumcampusSA #Belgium Campus [email protected] +27 10 593 53 68 /belgiumcampus 22 www.belgiumcampus.ac.za
